Re: Belgium: International trains causing delays
I think not. There have been recent discussions in Germany about DB's worsening punctuality and plans to fix it...and some even worse issues. See this Gumbo piece from last year: https://www.travelgumbo.com/bl...t-trains-on-the-rise

Re: Where in the World is TravelGumbo (#316)
Good Morning! It's Sunday, and here are the last clues. The easiest WITW #316 clues have arrived. If you know the year, make and model of the vehicle in Clue #2, you will have the mystery location solved. If you know what the planks are for in Clue #1, it is the easiest clue to solving this mystery. Good Luck. Answer revealed tomorrow.

Fascinating that among all the high-end metal there would be a place for a Model A Ford, albeit with special bodywork. Perhaps a family toy for the chauffeur's day off?

Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, October 24, 2015: Poppies -- Weeping Window at Woodhorn
I bought a Poppy in September this year from a Vietnam Vet in Easton MD. I commented on his cap with the dates on - and he removed his jacket to show me his T-shirt with his Division and Da Nang and a host of other cities where he fought. Had some amazing stories to tell. There should have been a crowd watching him, but just me. In 2015 a total of 888,246 hand made ceramic Poppy's were placed at Tower Bridge London to remember the number of men who fell in battle 1914 - 1918. The Poppy was...

Re: Classic American Cars #2
It's a 1958 Oldsmobile - probably a Super 88 sedan. Like the '53 Chevy, it's missing some trim that would positively identify the model. BTW - here's a web site that you folks should enjoy... brochures of hundreds of American cars: http://www.lov2xlr8.no/broch1.html

DrFumblefinger- I'm going to take a guess. The Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier in Long Beach.Shot taken on the pier where it make a t. I think I used to buy bait anchovies there as a kid. If it's not, I do think its a Pier in California.

Re: Where in the World is Gumbo? #4.5, 12/6/13
If anyone's really interested in finding this pier it's the details that count. Despite having the suggestion blown off earlier I still see mountains in the center distance, leading me to believe it's in Southern California. The railing is distinctive, 2 boards together at the top then just 1 more below. A few lights, all on one side. Then the cross bracing below and an "L" or "T" at the end for the angle of the shot. The closest I've seen so far are Ventura and Newport Beach but neither...

Re: Road Trip: The Movies and the Cars
Speaking of classic old cars... I've wanted a 1931 Model A sedan since I was 14 years old. So a few years ago the search began with the help of the president of the local Model A club. Using this guy's expertise plus online searching and suggestions from a financial guy I made a purchase in 2011. However, it was not a 1931 Model A sedan. This whole undertaking reminded me of the old axiom, "A camel is really a horse designed by a committee." While looking for the Model A I was talking my a...

Re: Tampa Bay Automobile Museum: 4) the French cars
Truly this is a great car museum; I like this wonderful French car collection. I am looking to buy the 1952 DeLaHaye 235 car, but I am bit worried whether we will get their performance parts on the market or not. Though I have explored the salvage yard of sites like sturtevantauto.com , buyusedengine.com etc. but couldn’t find the specific model here. Can you please guide me on this?

Re: Camera Advice, Please?
Three-year later follow-up on my original camera-quest. Still happy with the Sony despite its size, but never made a complete switchover: there are just some times when you have to have something that's pocket size. So, sometimes that's my Samsung S7 phone, but especially on the road, it's a camera that fit ALL of my original specs. It's the Panasonic Lumix ZS-50 (TZ50 outside the US). Eye-viewfinder (electronic), built-in WiFi to link to phones, 30x optical zoom and the Leica lenses. I've...

Re: Planning a Road Trip
That is a very good suggestion to think in terms of planning your trip as a connection of national (and state !) parks. The parks tend to be, by definition, in the scenic places, which are along the scenic drives. What a coincidence ! How handy ! The champions of finding scenic drives off of the interstates and shunways are the RVers. Check the sites used by RVers for ideas. Here is a good one: http://drivecrosscountry.net/T...r/Trip_Planning.html

Re: Classic American Cars #7
Definitely a little tricky. I couldn't see the grille on the yellow, but on the 51s I saw when I was checking it out, the chrome over the front wheel isn't a straight piece like this (has a little widening with a model name, I think). On the other hand, this one is missing the small panel just before the rear wheel "skirt," but that could have been a victim of time...

Re: JetBlue knows treating people well pays off in good-will
I'm hoping public pressure prevents this from happening. I've never lived in a market that JetBlue served, but would like to fly them sometime. I am very familiar with Southwest which has a very successful business model that includes offering folks slightly larger seats with more legroom, a free checked bag and non-cancellation fees (you get a credit that's good for one year, but no charges for having to change your flight). And they usually are the most profitable airline in the USA.

Re: Canada's Westjet enters Trans-Atlantic market
Westjet has been promoting this to its frequent flyer members (like yours truly) for months now. They have extensive routes in North America, including Mexico and the Caribbean, but this is a big change in their business model. I'm not sure if this will work well, though. Westjet only flies Boeing 737s (much like Southwest, for example). That transatlantic journey is a long and uncomfortable one to make in a single aisle aircraft. In contrast, Air Canada, the other major Canadian airline,...

Re: $6 BILLION in bag and change fees!
I'm not sure if it's a great business model to make most of your profits by annoying your customers. I think many have gotten their heads around the baggage fee (note coincidentally the increase in the number and size of bags rolling onto a plane), but some of the airline change fees are obscene. I point to Southwest airlines as one that still does the right thing. You get to check one bag without a fee. And ff you can't make your flight, they give you a credit on the airfare good up to one...

Re: Gold Country, California: The Empire Mine
The company towns in the coal territories had another function as well...they made the miners dependent on the company for housing, paid in scrip redeemable at the company store (remember "Sixteen Tons"?). That not only gave the company a second profit from the miners' labor through high prices; it also gave the company a great deal of control over miners' lives—because striking or being fired meant a total uprooting and expulsion. I guess the model didn't take root in the gold camps!
