Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, September 25, 2014: Statue of Elvis Presley, Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada

DrFumblefinger ·
I'm old enough to remember the Vegas Years, although was too young at the time to go see Elvis in Vegas. Fans always commented that Elvis was at his best in Vegas -- relaxed, chatty (talking to the crowd a lot), and despite it's large size, it was a fairly intimate performance venue with lots of direct audience contact. (Watch the video all the way to the end to see the audience) The statue was unveiled by Barron Hilton just outside the showroom where Elvis performed, and it stood there for...

Re: More Life at the Edge: What’s in a Name?

Paul Heymont ·
A little more...I've just been criticized for not recognizing those who took other names to protect themselves from an oppressive government (Lenin comes to mind) or a gender barrier (George Sand) or to allow political debate without reference to personality (Publius, the name used by Jay, Hamilton and Madison in writing the Federalist papers). And then there's Martin Gardner; I've just finished reading his autobiography (titled Undiluted Hocus Pocus) in which he reveals that he occasionally...

Great photos and wonderful descriptions! We visited Antigua many years ago, but it was shrouded in the day we were there and we didn't get to see the famous volcanoes. It seems I missed much on my exploration of the city, but some of these sites are familiar. Thanks for sharing and looking forward to part II.

Re: St. James Park, London

Roderick Simpson ·
Thank you for the interesting article on St. James's Park, London. I agree that it can be crowded at times, although these days it is a pleasure to see plenty of people together without masks. I attach a picture of spring flowers and the lake. Until recently, the Royal College of Pathologists' office building was overlooking the Mall (it has since moved), and in 2011 Fellows were able to watch the Royal Wedding procession from the balcony. Just nearby is an unusual memorial to Giro (A...
