Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, January 8, 2015: Statue of Elvis Presley, Beale Street, Memphis, TN
Great pictures, Ottoman! And for rock'n'roll fans, a special day. Elvis at 80 is a little hard to imagine, but I'm sure were he alive he would just crack a joke about it. TravelGumbo is doing a series on Elvis destinations in the south next month, so keep an eye out for that!

Re: Aw shucks. Danes are no longer the World's Happiest People
The idea that the Danes, and other Scandinavians, are the happiest people has always puzzled me. A Canadian friend, who lived in Denmark for decades, described them as the most depressed people, with the social problems that come with such conditions. It makes me wonder if the criteria for such lists & studies have little to do with conditions "on the ground".

Re: Aw shucks. Danes are no longer the World's Happiest People
I do know that the further north people live, the less daylight they have in the winter, the higher the rate of depression. For example, Alaska has a high winter suicide rate at least in part because it is so gloomy there half of the year. The same, I would think, is true of the Nordic folks. My perception of these sorts of lists is that they represent things that "should make you happy", much like our friends, the Eloi. What are some of the things that make me happy? An evening with good...

Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, Jan. 1, 2014: A Bird on the Beach
I think updates of this picture should be a recurring reminder of the seasons. Add coats to the chair, take them away. Add hot beverages, change to cold. And in fits of summer euphoria, add bathing suits, take them away... I'll be watching!

I think we'd all accept a re-creation then, Backyard Beach Babylon. A truckload of sand, a backdrop, stuffed birds that could change with the seasons to simulate migration for more interest. Your fans await. Or, your fan awaits?

Many Happy Returns! German company rents Christmas trees
For those who hate to have a cut-down tree and then throw it out, but can't bring themselves to love an artificial tree, Germany's Happy Tree company has a solution. They'll rent you a festive tree, and then take it back after the holiday. A startup last year when they rented 400 trees to customers in Cologne and Dusseldorf, this year they are aiming at 3000, in 12 cities, including Hamburg, Bremen and Hannover. Last year, about 75% of the trees survived the holidays; the company is aiming...
