Re: Visiting Western Greenland. Part I – Three Towns
Dr Fumblefinger : Happy to answer questions. Kangerlussuaq is fairly basic by comparison to what we're used to though I love the town and feel at home there now! It's a converted US airbase basically! (Can't browse to my photos from Insert/Edit Image button above?) Accommodation : airport hotel (good standard), campsite (very basic), private accommodation hire options exist though I've not used them in this town - as I'm also part of a wild goose research team, I can stay at the science...

Re: Van Gogh Museum takes a new look at Vincent
The Van Gogh Museum is one of the most interesting art museums I've ever visited. Basically it's the collection of Vincent's brother, Theo, an art dealer who saw his brother's potential and who helped support him by purchasing his paintings. Around half of the art Van Gogh created is in this museum and with this fresh look, it's definitely a "Must See" for folks coming to Amsterdam.

Re: Arcos de la Frontera, Spain (Where Gumbo was #296)
I agree completely - Arcos is well worth a visit. It lies at the edge of a mountainous area with relatively high rainfall, so you might not see as much sun as you perhaps expect in Spain. However, there are many nice places where you can shelter from a shower. Bar la Cárcel was our favourite. A word of warning: if you have a large hire car, leave it at the bottom. The streets further up are very narrow and we noticed that many local cars looked a bit like this one. Many houses and walls have...

Re: RV Popularity Surges—Here's Why!
I guess the experience in the UK in particular echoes this growth but for quite different reasons. We have been seeing RV purchases (and hire), rocket with the windfall maturity of pension schemes related to final salaries - no longer available in most jobs, but the govt and utilities companies have large lump sums and pretty good income for life. The lump sum buys the RV and day to day expenses can be covered by putting your empty home on Airbnb ! Even if you don't have the pension, if...

Re: UK charges big fraud in rental car repair
For the last 4 or 5 years I have taken out a separate insurance policy which covers all my car rentals over a 12-month period. The annual cost for Europe-wide coverage is in the region of £40 and only slightly more for the world-wide version. I need to pay any repair costs upfront, but can then reclaim it from the insurers. Takes the worry out of car hire (and saves a lot of money compared to the insurance offered by the hire companies).

Re: Germans saying 'Nein!' to vacation time
Paying for the vacation is certainly a big issue; one that affected my family for years. It's interesting the way such issues can play out when employers either count on people not taking vacation, or actually paying them not to. Case in point: Norwegian Air has just had to hire more pilots, quickly, to avoid cancellation of many flights. The company had expected its pilots to be more willing to "sell back" their days off than they turned out to be. And speaking of Germany: One of the perks...

Re: Amateur Emigrants: From Mountain to Sea
https://www.travelgumbo.com/bl...4#666170148711825784 There was only a 5 metre stretch of concrete to the Yasmina - just to stabilise the stream bed- the rest was as seen on the shepherd and mule shot, vague 4wd tracks in the rubble. Astonishingly, when I went back with a girlfriend in a hire car from Marrakesh in 1997, I arrived in the dark and was speaking with my companion in the car park and a shout rang out “BOB !” My voice had been recognised after 11 years by Hassan the vet brother.
