Arthur Avenue is definitely a stop on my next NYC visit. Unfortunately my regional area has a dearth of generational family run restaurants and small butcher shops, bakeries and the like.

Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, Apr. 27, 2014: Painted Ladies in San Francisco

Many Victorian buildings that survived the 1906 earthquake were destroyed in the fires that followed. Those, like these, that escaped both were largely located west of Van Ness Ave, the line at which fire fighters dynamited buildings, creating a fire line to save at least part of the city. I'm glad these were saved, PHeymont, or the City would be a very different place, wouldn't it. Thanks.

Re: Where in the World is TravelGumbo? (#120)

DrFumblefinger ·
I guess it's time for another clue. I was hopeful someone would look at the original puzzle clue and say "Egypt", but no such luck. The sphinx is too new perfect-looking and when you pull back a little, you find some decorations around it that let us know we're not in Egypt. So let's start getting a little more specific. Here's today's clue. Anyone recognize this lady sitting outside our building of interest? She's quite famous....

Ah yes...I have been to this place. Nice pics DrFumblefinger. Your first photo threw me for a loop, for I don't remember a sphinx being at this location. But when I saw the other photos, like the lobby shot with the huge staircase containing statues of two large animals (?? bison), and especially the exterior shot with a figure on the top dome...looks like a golden boy....hmmmmmmmm.

Thanks for sharing you Egyptian adventures. I'm sure you were looking over you shoulder for any tourist lurking danger. I especially liked the Roman fresco and Amun profiles. You are a true traveler, story teller and photographer of ancient locations that I would probably never visit. You are also a great advisory to ID'ing those WITW Gumbo photos.

Thanks, George, so glad you're enjoying them. I laughed at 2 things you said - I actually forget to remember the possibility of "lurking danger". And if you mean "adversary", every week I forget to look at the WITWs until you've probably already named them. Not much of an adversary.

Like you, we were completely blown away by the temples and monuments along the Nile - to the extent that we booked an identical tour for the following year. The second time round we explored the more distant parts of the sites. We often found ourselves completely on our own.

I was often completely alone, too, possibly for a different reason, the shortage of visitors. I am considering going again next winter, and because independent travel is always a learn-as-we-go experience, I'll do some things differently and mention them later in the story.
