No - no more Fish. Fish like Cod and Haddock like the colder waters of the UK. Too much heat and they go further North to Iceland. The Gulf Stream often gets caught in a pattern. Thanks for your comment, Arion. It's hard not to be moved by D-Day. The vastness of the assault, the staggering loss of life (civilian and military). What most impressed me is that the local people remember. Not French people away from the coast, but those whose relatives went through the assault make a point of teaching their children and grandchildren the price paid to liberate them from the Nazi fascists. Yes - my Dad and lots of other guys told me their stories! My Dad was in the Royal Navy and was taking landing craft full of soldiers from ship to shore - several times - under heavy fire! A guy I was doing work for had lots of photos and souvenirs on the walls of his house. Medals and maps. Newspaper cuttings and Badges. All in frames. I asked him how much he remembered of D-Day. Several vets I know say that the Normandy beach landings as portrayed in the movie "Saving Private Ryan" are the way they remember it. Madness, chaos, noise, death, fear, adrenaline, more fear. If anyone's really interested in finding this pier it's the details that count. Despite having the suggestion blown off earlier I still see mountains in the center distance, leading me to believe it's in Southern California. The railing is distinctive, 2 boards together at the top then just 1 more below. A few lights, all on one side. Then the cross bracing below and an "L" or "T" at the end for the angle of the shot. The closest I've seen so far are Ventura and Newport Beach but neither...

WorkerBee - Indeed, it does look like that. Similar to pic below, if you ignore those buildings. Does Newport Beach have a mountain ? There must be a lot of contractors going up and down the coast of California, building and re-building similar piers.

It must be to left, out of the picture. I think you can see the edge. There's a space on the left of the beach that matches in both that's to the right of the red-roof building in the original.

Elephant seals are always good. If you also want to see their smaller cousins, the sea lions, you can find them at the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve. It is about 40 minutes south of San Francisco at Moss Beach. Nearby Half Moon Bay has several reasonably priced restaurants with views of the ocean. When I first visited Cuba back in the 90's it was a different Country to the one today. No TV's - Radio - Phones and many had no electric ! The Cuban Government asked visitors not to show the locals photos of our 3 cars - 2 houses and 14 acres of land by the beach. And how we had a Colour TV in every room. It upsets them. Not surprising really - and quite cruel ! Now its Air Con and fast catching up with the World ! The people are now free to leave and travel. They watch American Satellite...

That helps me figure out what to tell you, Mrs. Briggs OK, so I'd suggest you fly into LAX. You'll need a car rental to get around LA. Spend three or four days here, may go see Disneyland, maybe go see Universal Studios, maybe go to Knott's Berry Farm. Maybe see the making of a TV show. I wish I could remember where, but somewhere not too long before SF, there's a state park on a beach that the elephant seals are on. They are huge and they are incredibly funny when they move, but also fast, It's worth a stop for a while. And just a little further north was a state or county park with redwoods. Maybe someone here will know where I'm talking about!

It's a place with a colder climate because of the plants. Definitely not somewhere down south. PHeymont was writing about visiting Maine a few days ago. There was a beach there, I wonder if this is that beach? I'll take a guess at it. My guess is a trail around the Old Orchard beach in Maine.

The glass floats tend to wash up on the west (windward) side of the Pacific. This hike was on the leeward (eastern) side, where these floats tend not to come. But there were a gazillion trees, like these.

I've heard that- when visiting Japan - its best to have photo's on your phone to show people when asking directions. The Bus - Train - Airport - Beach - Drugstore - Market. Interesting read Rob. What are the rules for socialising in the evening ? Bars - Disco - Restaurants - Dress up and stay away from the Karaoke ? Is this part expensive ?

Hi Rob. Even in the 1600's this village had an expressway into the City of Liverpool. You could gallop your horse along the beach for 8 miles . And be in work in 20 minutes ! Takes you twice as long today in a city full of cars !

DrF !!!!! The village still has no beggars - no alehouses - no protestants ! Its only a recent decision to have electricity into the village. You can see the village in an hour - its only small. But you can follow the ancient footpaths through the farmland. See the wild fox, geese and birds of prey that live there. Or walk down to the beach. When the tide goes out it leaves 5 miles of sand !

This is a beautiful beach. Is it a daft question to ask if there are alligators around? I'm Australian, and our more northern beaches get huge crocodiles as well as sharks, so I'm not quite sure if the same goes for alligators in Florida!

Hi Jessica! While it is not impossible, it is quite rare to see a gator at this beach, I only know of one time that a gator was ever spotted there, and that was only a 3.5 ft long one. It is much more likely that you'll see a shark before seeing a gator
