Amazing piece of engineering. Had a really long look at the road and I couldn't see any donkeys. Just like the mountain roads in the Sierra Nevada, Spain which don't have the luxury of the walls at the roadside. Great fun on a bus with 6 inches to spare on those bends !

Re: Why You should visit Nevada's Valley of Fire

DrFumblefinger ·
You are correct, GarryRF. There have been a number of movies filmed in the park. Lifted straight from Wikipedia , here is a listing of these: Film History : Valley of Fire is a popular location for shooting automobile commercials and other commercial photography. It has provided a setting for the following films and television shows: The Professionals with Burt Lancaster , Lee Marvin , and Claudia Cardinale was filmed in 1966. As of November 2012 a piece of the movie set is still up for...

I have no clue on where Gumbo is, but your clue helped me discover another car company I didn't know existed! To get the comments rolling, I'm guessing it is a mining museum in the Western US- maybe Nevada or Colorado.

Re: A visit to Great Basin National Park

Never been anywhere in Nevada except Vegas. Didn't know they had beautiful places like this. Can you get there from Vegas as a day trip? Was it hot?

Re: A visit to Great Basin National Park

DrFumblefinger ·
Well, for a start, make sure you visit Reno, Travel Luver. It's a much small town than Vegas but still has all the casinos, restaurants, etc that you'd expect from a Nevada City. From here it's easy to do a day trip to Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada Mountains, or down to Carson City. Reno is actually the closest major city to Great Basin National Park, say about a 3-4 hour drive. Vegas is 6-7 hour drive away. Salt Lake City is closer to Great Basin than Vegas. But you really can't do it as...

Re: Gold Country California: Malakoff Diggins, Ranger Connie in Charge

PortMoresby ·
I did, indeed, Dgems. And this last time, too, up one way, down the other. But it seems to me one is about as bad as the other and I'm so glad I decided not to live up there! The altitude at the park is about 5,000', DrF, and it gets quite a bit of snow when there's moisture to be had. So, anytime but winter is a good time. Tours by "herself" are summer only. Grass Valley and Nevada City are at about 2500'.
