I find the idea that fees will bring better tourists a bit bizarre, myself--although it's also clear to me that they would not be too unhappy about discouraging some of the young backpackers who stay "too long." I suspect that if they really wanted to end the sex tourism, they'd have done it long since, simply by shutting down places and arresting customers. That would only have to happen once or twice for the word to spread...

My main purpose in traveling is to see how things are done elsewhere. I try only observe and not overlay my personal opinion on what is there. After all, the point is to see and learn. Sometimes, as in this case, it can be hard to lay aside those personal feelings. The old custom does speak volumes about the importance to these people of tradition and structure in their lives. Thank you for the thought provoking photo.

Not a huge increase this time, but there's nothing like encouraging less of an activity (in this case tourism) than charging more for it. I can only imagine that this is hurtful to the tourist traffic in the UK. With those kinds of fees, people will avoid UK airports (say flying in the the Netherlands or elsewhere) and that means less UK jobs, and so on.

Tourism isn't hurting from the Tax increases. Passengers through Heathrow have increased steadily: 2011 - 69 Million 2012 - 70 Million All 5 London airports have reached a joint record of 133 Million passengers in 2012 ! So our Government will continue to squeeze the Golden Goose !

I am not sure if an employee working in tourism in NYC would have a higher quality of life even if paid more. Orlando at least is cheap. Also many folks in the tourist trade make a lot of their earnings from tips which rarely are fully reported as income. So I never know what to make of studies like this

I'm not sure if all of their reasons to why tourism is up in Manchester are right, but at least some of them are. I think the main reasons tourism's up is that people are discovering how nice a destination it is and how inexpensive the city can be compared to London. And they tell their friends. For the artists models to hold that pose long enough to do a stone carving was a feat of endurance far greater than completing a marathon ! Interesting blog showing that history can be both entertaining and meaningful.

Thanks for commenting and glad that you enjoyed the post! Yes, imagine posing for a stone carving! I hadn't thought of it like that but was amazed by the quality and detail of the work. I find history really amazing and understanding about the history and meaning behind things like ancient temples and historical architecture makes the visit much more interesting for me. I'm going to have to agree with the Governor. One must acknowledge a problem before it can be fixed. I believe La Guardia is just about the worst airport I've had the misfortune to use in recent years. I include any number of developing nations in the assessment. Most countries try to encourage tourism by giving a good impression on arrival. Even in places where infrastructure as a whole is lacking, the airports are often clean and new. I sincerely hope the Governor succeeds in this.
