My wife Diane and I spent almost an entire day at Kew Gardens. So much natural beauty to see. We arrived from central London at the Kew Station in mid-morning and didn't leave until almost dusk. Another simple photo that inspires lots of chat. I too was wondering who first caught Miss Angela's eye. But then ... gentlemen never kiss and tell ! Love the artwork, something the stuffy Brits would never allow ! The USAF had a base at Burtonwood UK. Close to Liverpool where I now live. The aircraft would fly almost non-stop. Palm Springs has lots of retired residents and especially winter residents. it really is a thriving resort city. It has become a year round city, but does get very hot from May through September. The rest of the year is warm. They say it gets 350 days of sun a year.

Winters are absolutely wonderful in the Palm Springs area. Summers are unbearably hot. Temps can exceed 40 C, Garry. I made the mistake of stopping there in the summer some years back and when I got back to my car, the vehicle was so hot I actually burned my hand trying to get the door open. It is thriving, especially in the winter. Summers tend to be relatively slower paced as is true of any place with a very hot climate. We are fortunate to live out in the countryside with a reasonably-sized garden in which to potter about. It is not huge, but gives us plenty of opportunity to exercise and to experiment with different ideas for creating pleasant recreational spaces. The garden has been a real blessing in the current situation and looking out of the window in a way brings foreign climes close to home. Palms do grow in the local parks and you will find them in gardens/parks elsewhere in Wales (and Cornwall),...

Thanks for the reminder of Trachycarpus fortunei, a really useful one for we palm lovers who don't live in the tropics. I had good luck with two I grew in the mountains of Arizona & could use one or more in a new garden I'm working on in a place with similar temperatures.

Well, I have plenty of spare seedlings here - free to a good home, but you will need to collect them. :-) I found quite a few more since I wrote this little piece. I can't be sure what specific varieties they are - time will tell, I suppose. If you have a windy spot - we get plenty of gales here - you might want to consider T. 'wagnerianus'. The leaves are very stiff (almost like plastic). The downside is that they are much slower-growing (and people refer to them as 'dwarf' palms largely...

Thanks for the offer - I'm sure you know how nice it would be to take you up on it. A very poor substitute to picking up yours, I've just found some quite reasonably priced seedlings on Ebay. It will have to do. Regarding getting "to a decent size in the end," I'm at the point where I must consider my own end in the plant choices I make. I resist the notion I'm planting for future generations, however true it may be, & want to enjoy them in my own!

I understand what you're saying. I have always been fascinated by the cork oak plantations in places like Portugal. The people who planted the original saplings must have had a long-term view on things that I admire, but find difficult to comprehend fully.
