An ever changing canvas of art. Sometimes you just have to stop - and take in the beauty of nature. As the sun was setting last week - the sky turned a shade of purple. On my first visit to Anna Maria I was amazed that the Pelicans would sit next to you on the pier by Allemande Villas. Like a pet dog. They would try and steal your bait as you were fishing. But like a good dog they responded to a "Hey you!" and sat watching you. When I caught my first fish I pulled and fought with the monster! As I lifted my prize from the water my new Pelican friend flexed his wings. He glided off the Pier and with great precision removed my catch from the hook! He passed...

I n the mid-90s the National Park Service sent a team of professionals to do a survey of surviving road and features of the entire route, Chicago to the Santa Monica Pier, with my husband as illustrator for the report. I don't know if it's generally available but it might be interesting reading for someone with more than a casual interest.

Interesting. I work in San Francisco near the Ferry Building and frequently jaunt down to Pier 39 on my lunch break for exercise. Tourist alley, especially now that they have a new cruise terminal between the Ferry Building and Pier 39. Just today I nearly fell into a couple who stopped to take a picture of Coit Tower, speaking in an English accent. I moved on and got out of their way. 'Tis different when the shoe is on another foot, I suppose.

Lovely photos, SCP, thanks! White Rock is a great day-trip destination from Vancouver, even Seattle. A charming place just north of the 49th parallel, it's a wonderful place to go for a walk by the sea or to get some fresh seafood. Walking out to the end of the pier and looking back at the mainland is a memorable moment.

This will really help on time. As a kid, I took the bus from Santa Monica to Downtown LA a lot and it took forever but it was to be one of the most interesting rides anywhere. It goes through such diverse neighborhoods it almost doesn't seem real.

They sure have an interesting mix for travel in Cuba...I loved the pictures of the old cars in your other post! In New York I saw bicycle taxis, too, but they were smaller and just for tours, not really for getting around.

Me too DrFumblefinger ! The Oxen pulling ploughs I've seen in Lancaster PA. but if you need a vase for Flowers (Birthdays) you get the bottom half of a 2 litre plastic Coke Bottle with wrapping paper around it. Looks quite good really ! But the bit that hurts is seeing folks suffer from curable things - like thyroid problems - that we take for granted now as being treatable. Homeopathy and Voodoo prevail... really !

Thanks for the link T&N. Bill Gates funds the School of Tropical Medicine here in Liverpool in its search for better treatment and a cure for Malaria. But tales of Save the Planet are all Hogwash. People who live in cool climates - like me - cant wait for the climate to warm up. When the Vikings discovered Greenland a thousand years ago they described it as a "Green and pleasant land with pastures and animals" - and now its just a frozen waste again ! Turn up the CO2 !

DrFumblefinger- I'm going to take a guess. The Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier in Long Beach.Shot taken on the pier where it make a t. I think I used to buy bait anchovies there as a kid. If it's not, I do think its a Pier in California.

If anyone's really interested in finding this pier it's the details that count. Despite having the suggestion blown off earlier I still see mountains in the center distance, leading me to believe it's in Southern California. The railing is distinctive, 2 boards together at the top then just 1 more below. A few lights, all on one side. Then the cross bracing below and an "L" or "T" at the end for the angle of the shot. The closest I've seen so far are Ventura and Newport Beach but neither...

Sharp eyes! If you hadn't pointed that out, I would have gone on thinking those faint shadows were part of the clouds. Definitely a wooden pier; so much for all the concrete ones I'm finding. Not very wide either. I searched "wooden bridge railings" and you're right--there are almost none with that pattern. Any hints, Dr. F?

If we can judge by the pictures, I've been tricked before, I don't think it's either of those. The Port Hueneme lights & bracing aren't the same and the railing is wrong on the Cayucos Pier. That's IF the pictures are labelled right and assuming nothing has changed. 2 big if's.

The towns of Oxnard and Ventura are next to each other. Using Streetview seems to eliminate Ventura Pier, not as many buildings as in DrF's photo. I'm not finding anything called Oxnard Pier so I think maybe the pier closest to Oxnard is Port Hueneme Fishing Pier which has almost no buildings, park and parking lot, it would appear.

Look at the left side of your pic. Isn't that the edge of the red roofed building to the left of the last palm? Mr. Baseball cap: "Why is it taking them so long to find us?" The other gulls are camera shy.

That helps me figure out what to tell you, Mrs. Briggs OK, so I'd suggest you fly into LAX. You'll need a car rental to get around LA. Spend three or four days here, may go see Disneyland, maybe go see Universal Studios, maybe go to Knott's Berry Farm. Maybe see the making of a TV show. In your photo of the pink boat is a clue. I'm surprised WorkerBee never mentioned it with his detective work. On the Pier is a HH sign. Its the company logo for Helly Hansen who make waterproof clothing for sailors. Their HQ is in Oslo, Norway. Good fun - wasn't it ! Thanks
