Thanks for sharing this post. I had no idea there was an MTM statue in Minneapolis. MTM show remains one of my all-time favorites. Superb writing and character development, great acting, fine story telling. Wish more shows like this were still made.

I totally agree DrFumblefinger. When you see much of the material that passes for television these days, it makes me appreciate even more how good the Mary Tyler Moore show really is.

The characters on MTM were generally functional people, with problems, and with a sense of purpose (even if some had purposes a bit off-kilter). Even Ted was not a total idiot. Think how many shows today rise to that standard...go on, I'm waiting...

Don't get left out again! You can follow Gumbo on your mobile device...it comes up formatted for tiny-screen use, but if you have enough screen (most smartphones do) click on settings and choose "standard view," or use the menu to select "Desktop view."

Your photo reminds me of a cruise we just did a few months ago in the Chilean fjordland. When we approached cape Horn, famous for its stormy seas, we were in constant winds of 100 knots, with gusts of 160 knots. The deck was even emptier than your photo above would indicate! I think you've just sold me another book (although I'm married to someone who has been accused—by me—of causing a world comma shortage). I think Mary Norris is nudging us all to the place I've arrived at: the two purposes of punctuation are clarity of intent, and to indicate emphasis for speaking. If the ancient rules don't accomplish that, and sometimes they don't, toss 'em! As for me, I'm addicted to em dashes...hangover of my typographic career.
