Camping on the pig farm beyond the abbey in the sixties But loved it. A fine wee nugget of a port town that never seems to lose its charm - there's no room, unlike sprawling cousins of Scarboro, Brid and Filey

CICAK. No one gets upset over a few words here. Unlike my family in the US who think that an exchange of views is the start of WW3. I enjoy exchanging opinions and alternate ideas. As do most people here in the UK. Constructive criticism is a wonderful thing ! DrFunblefinger likes to throw me some "bait" occasionally - but he knows I wont bite the hook. PHeymont likes to rock my boat too. But it's just "light hearted teasing" and we've all been friends for many years ! Some of the...

Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, March 18th, 2014: Chihuahua Man of Marsaxlokk

Island Man, just over a year ago I landed on Malta after my freighter trip from Singapore. I stayed first in Marsaxlokk for several days, at Duncan Accommodations, above the bar of the same name, which it appears Chihuahua Man is looking right at! I loved the town, especially fun on market day. Thanks for the memory.

Love the photo and the backstory, Islandman! Chihuahuas are really quite amazing animals -- extremely intelligent and very affectionate with their owners. A little small for my taste, but I can see his attraction to them.

The one I have in the photo is married (this was to avoid confusion, I was there with my boyfriend but we're not really married). The one for single was a lot simpler, just a streak on each cheek as I remember it, but I didn't get to see the one for 'looking' as no one in our group was!!

Re: Punalu'u Black Sand Beach Park, Hawaii Island, Hawaii

GarryRF ·
You'd love the Canary Isles. Volcanic islands off the north west cost of Africa. Its a winter hotspot where the islands belong to Spain. Its party time all year and a favourite with the younger set. Its famous on Tenerife for young men to drive up Mount Teide in winter and collect snow from the peak in Cooler Boxes. Drive back down to the 77'f / 25'c beaches and throw snowballs at the topless sunbathers. Might be a bit too much for non-Europeans !!

Re: September 20. 2019: Drying Fish, Beruwala, Sri Lanka

DrFumblefinger ·
The Sri Lankans sure know how to make some delicious curries from those dried fish, Professor -- thanks for showing how it's done, so simple really. It's surprising how the tradition lasts, even in days of good refrigeration. For example, in Alaska many of the dog team owners dry hundreds -- even thousands -- of salmon each year with which to feed their teams (and themselves) over the long cold winter. Spaniards remain fond of dried salted fish for their dishes, and I'm sure there are other...

Paul Heymont ·
We southern North Americans are not that unfamiliar with the poppies, although perhaps the younger ones...in my childhood and on, they were annually a tradition carried on by the American Legion. Actually, a little research tells me that the tradition started with them in 1921, and then spread to UK and Commonwealth! Here's the text of the poem, written by John McRae, a Canadian soldier and physician: In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place;...

Re: You CAN'T Take It All With You: Keeping the Load Light

A nicely written piece, PHeymont, with lots of good tips in it. I generally have two packing philosophies 1) Road trip (North America0. If I've got a large car trunk, then I'll take a lot of stuff along just not to have to bother with stuff like laundry. Might even throw in a heavy tripod and good pair of hiking boots, as well as a fishing rod, etc. 2) Overseas plane trip. Lighter is definitely better. A carry-on size bag like you and your wife use is idea. Especially if you will be...

Thanks for your comments, Garry. The kids there were all having a lot of fun, so it would be the kind of place for families to visit for sure. They have special kid-focused exhibits and play areas, perfect for keeping their attention and letting off some steam. The Dangerous Reef exhibit is especially impressive and worth the ticket price all by itself. But there are a lot of unusual exhibits and aquatic animals. My favorite aquarium still remains the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which I hope to...

Lucky on one hand, disappointed on the other. Locals were friendly yet cautious especially towards me as I am brown skinned like them. They were confused as to why I'm not in local dress (complete black) as their women. I had a couple kids even throw stones at me but again I was with bodyguards so it wasn't that big a deal to me. When I was with the older white men I worked with, people there considered me the "hired escort." Culture shock really do come in all forms.
