It seems to be "Leopold", a symbolic 1890's photographer, by David Clemons, Higgins Point, Lake Coeur d'Alene in northern Idaho.

However there is a minor point about the location. Higgens Point (yes, this is the correct spelling) is about 0.2 mile southeast of the location of the statue. The statue is actually located on the 34 acre Coeur d'Alene Parkway, a thin strip of park land running along the Centennial Trail for about 1/2 mile...

Re: Capital of Culture Series: Liverpool

Here's a good quote Paul PORTRAIT OF AN UNHEALTHY CITY - NEW YORK INTHE 1800'S by David Rosner Columbia University When a horse died, its carcass would be left to rot until it had disintegrated enough for someone to pick up the pieces. Children would play with dead horses lying on the streets. In addition to lacking street cleaning, the city also had no sewage system and no flush toilets. Garbage--which included both human and animal waste--was basically thrown out windows and onto city...

Re: Showdown in Florence: Contemporary Artists vs Michelangelo

I don't know how these contemporary artists feel, but it's a tall order to be compared to Michelangelo. I think I'd rather take on the original Dream Team in basketball in their prime then what these artists up against.

Re: Travel for Garden Lovers, Part I

Dgems, maybe you should give Patricia Silva a call and ask her about her varieties of roses. She's up off 49, down Newtown Road and must have deer too. I don't recall fences that would inhibit them. The only one I checked was a David Austin variety, the pale pink climber in the horizontal photo above.

Some great pictures in this batch again, David. Nicely done! I've two particular favorites in this lot, the leopard for its spectacular beauty, and the one of the hyenas -- a brutal portrait of nature.

Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, August 25, 2014: Nail Art, Toronto, Canada

Paul Heymont ·
The nail sculpture, and especially the last picture, remind me a bit of El Anatsui's work, a visual fabric composed of commonplace elements. Fabulous! I did a little looking, and was able to find the artist, David Partridge. The work is called Metropolis, and uses more than 100,000 nails. If you drop a coin into it at the top, apparently, the coin will find a path to the bottom, making random music as it goes! Here's some more about it
