One of the great iconic symbols in the history of R&R! Sam Phillips was an absolute genius. And sometimes most amazing to me is that all that talent lived in one small city. I think Memphis has only around 300,000 or so population. Memphis gave rise to soul, rhythm and blues, and of course rock and roll music. What a wonderful musical legacy! Thanks for the stroll down memory lane!

Thanks Ottoman for sharing your Sun Studios visit. I was there in 2007 and enjoyed every magic moment of it. My wife had to drag me away after the third day as we had to move on to our next destination (!). Being there was like stepping into the shoes of all the musical greats who had passed through those doors. My music collection has an abundance of Sun recordings and they are still my favorites.

Actually, the importance of Memphis is long-standing and for good reason: it's on a flood-free bluff above the Mississippi. At different times in its history, both French and Spanish armies built forts there to control traffic on the Mississippi, and before the Civil War, it was the terminus of the only east-west railroad to cross the South...so it has always been a big transportation center. The railroad guaranteed its role in shipping cotton, and made it the center of the region.

What! and spoil my headline? Seriously, though, not necessarily. The deposit of sand and similar materials is a longer process than is being discussed here, and the new shorelines would be quite different, at least for a long time.

So many resorts truck in their "beaches", it may turn out to be more an excuse to build new fancier versions of themselves than the prospect of their disappearance. Where there's a will...and you know there is!

When the Vikings first discovered Greenland a thousand years ago they wrote of a "Green and pleasant land with pastures, cows and animals". Now its a frozen wasteland ! In 1817 the wine producers of North Yorkshire (England) abolished their trade association as summers were becoming too cold to grow grapes. They've never grown grapes since ! This time last year we were digging the snow out. Today is 68f and sunny. Climate change doesn't go away. Ever.

No, climate change doesn't go away...but until the last century, we lacked the ability to really push it in one direction or another. The issue these years is not the natural progression but the degree to which our emissions and more have upset the balance. On the one hand, I won't be around to see how it all comes out...but I'm concerned because my grandchildren will be!

I do not believe that the burning of fossils fuels has any effect on the direction of the Jet Stream. Which in turn controls the weather around the world. I do believe that the Petro-Chemical Refineries from the New Jersey coast and further south releasing tons of nasty unwanted chemicals into the atmosphere does have a big effect on the de-forestation of Europe with acid rain. They release this gas when the wind is blowing east across the Atlantic. And when the wind suddenly changes the...

While I certainly agree with you about the refineries (remember how close to some of them I live) the jetstream is hardly the only factor involved in weather and climate. I'm not best equipped to explain more...that's the domain of my wife the science teacher...but it's clear there's a scary future ahead...

The Jet Stream is responsible for the California drought. The Polar Vortex you've been suffering from - and for the UK not having frosty weather since last November. English strawberries in Winter and de-icing salt being 15cents for a 10 kilo sack ! Its not yet April and I've cut the grass twice ! Blame it all on the Jet Stream.

I love In-n-out burgers. My ongoing comparison and self-argument is whether or not In-n-Out is better than Five Guys burgers on the east coast. Also a very limited menu - burgers and fries, that is it. Both are real good

I grew up on the burgers and they always have been consistently good. It's been interesting to see how popular they've have become attracting visitors from all over as a must see stop.

I'm gonna get killed, here, I know it, but I would rank In-n-Out in a class with Wendy's. Thin patties, no juiciness, nothing to write home about. After years of hearing about them from West Coast friends, the reality was so disappointing...

That analogy, PHeymont, is like equating the quality of pineapple or papaya picked and consumed in the tropics with the stuff you buy at your corner grocery store in Brooklyn. If it's a thicker patty you're looking for, I suggest the meatloaf sandwich at a local deli.

On my recent trip to the US I found 5 Guys fast and good. An attractive young lady on roller skates brings your order out to your car. I'm sure she works in Hooters too ! In Wendys I had to get more napkins to catch all the grease running down my arm. Awful place. In Cracker Barrel - which has always been great - the meatloaf went back with cardboard and sellotape in it. The Waitress noticed my English accent -apologized - and said "Well, you're only passing through" The Manager came out too...

My California friends always spoke o f it with reverence, not as fast or junk food, and thatbset my expectations. And note that the headline of this blog sets the same view. But now it sounds as if it is being offered as best of a generally bad lot, NOT what a hamburger is "all about!"

#&^%@! Now I want In N Out! I'm fortunate to have one less than a mile from me. I actually don't eat there that often, but when I get that craving, its all over! I like Five Guys as well. What I like about them is that you do seem to get more for your buck as a "small" fry is practically half a bag and the small burgers are huge. Heading off to eat a salad. How boring.

PHeymont. Everyone is entitled to their opinion about food, although in this case yours is a minority view. The title was a bit of an inside joke. In-n-Out uses this in its promotional material....as in this brief video clip.

I looked on a comparison site for Burgers. It seems that most people who have a passion for In-N-Out are from California. One 5* Review guy wrote " I go to bed at night I dreaming of In-N-Out burgers" Wonderful passion for a Football Team maybe. But a burger ? Very sad.

Yes, as tacky as the sentiment is (I mean, lock up your love and throw away the key?) it's not going to end, and trying to banish it to an out-of-the-way place won't work either. But provide it with a setting that is special in its own way, and maybe it will work. In Heidelberg last summer we noted that there were hardly any locks on the city's Alte Brucke (Old Bridge), but next to the bridge, with a view of it and the castle, we spotted the Heidelbergerliebesstein, or Heidelberg Love Stone.

Thank you for bringing back terrific memories of visiting this famous studio. My wife and I first visited it in the late 1980s and enjoyed the tour, followed by lunch at the Sun Cafe. To my great delight, the cafe's Wurlitzer had an original Sun 45 by Elvis in its stack (Sun #223). I have been collecting records since I was in early teens and have a number of Sun records, including all 5 of Elvis' Sun records in both 78 rpm and 45 rpm formats. Not sure what they're worth right now, but...

Great story and photos Samantha. One of my favorite singers of all time is Roy Orbison who got his recording start with Sam Phillips and Sun Record at Sun Studio. Roy's spectacular recording successes were offset by the tragedies in his family life.
