Re: St Stephen's Green, Dublin. (Where Gumbo was #137)

Paul Heymont ·
I have to admit that the first clue reminded me, in succession, of a spot in Parc des Buttes-Chaumont in Paris, of Prospect Park in Brooklyn and of Frogness Park in Oslo...it was only when the clues got more specific that I could rule them out, and only when the Fusiliers Arch appeared and I could search its text that I could find the answer. That arch, by the way, provoked a lot of controversy when erected in 1907; it memorializes a regiment in England's colonial war against the Dutch Boers...

St Stephen's Green, Dublin. (Where Gumbo was #137)

DrFumblefinger ·
(St. Stephen's Green, Dublin, 1899)   Gumbo was visiting the best known city park in Dublin, St. Stephen's Green.  Situated atop the busy pedestrian mall, Grafton street, it's the "green lungs" of the city. ...

Sydney to Brisbane Road Trip

Liam Smith ·
Few people would argue that Australia is one of the best possible destinations out there for any traveler: it has both interesting cityscapes and natural sceneries of a lifetime. And if you like the freedom of stopping whenever and wherever you wish to in order to marvel at the beautiful view, perhaps a road trip is right up your alley. One of the most popular roads for such a trip in Australia is the one taking you from Sydney to Brisbane: the Legendary Pacific Coast. This road stretching...

Not just a huge collection of books: Samantha shows us that the main research branch of the New York Public Library is worth a visit for the building itself.

When this Museum opened I offered to give some D-Day artefacts from my father. But they had enough to fill the rooms already. But they were very polite and thanked me.

Looks great! I remember touring that factory as a kid and going home with pockets full of misformed "ugly" chocolates that couldn't be sold. Will have to check out this museum someday

I could go into the Rose Room and lay on my back just admiring that amazing ceiling. A wonderful work of art.

Thanks for bringing back special memories of a great place. I love libraries, and this is one of the greatest I've ever visited. Nice post and great photos, Samantha, thanks!

Thanks guys. I loved all of New York, but this was very special. The ceilings reminded me of the ceilings you see in Europe. Sadly some people probably don't notice unless someone points it out Like I said in the post, it was the only time I felt like I was able to relax, breathe, and take in my surroundings. Definitely look forward to visiting again. Thanks again for you comments.

You'd love the architecture in this building Samantha - St Georges Hall Liverpool England. I worked here for a few years.

Thanks for the new perspective! I live in New York and have worked in that library many times over the years (including in days when it wasn't so well-kept), but you've still given me a fresh view of the building itself!

Interesting tale, Rob. Sorry that you had to leave Vivie behind. I did two 14 day quarantines this past year and know someone who had to do six of them. What a waste of productive time. Never again.

In our case, I'm very grateful. We had to jump through a lot of hoops but we managed to see each other during most of the pandemic. But I've heard so many heartbreaking stories. Couples that can't see each other. Divorced parents who can't see their kids . Mother's that can't see their sons. The list goes on. Not to mention all the jobs losses in the border towns and property owners who are going to have to deal with houses left vacant for 2 years. I think Canada will start to open up soon...

Garry - In this case, everyone was nice. And as a positive, I got to see a glimpse of Maine . I think I have a better understanding of how the border communities view each other as one. Prime Minister Trudeau quoted President Reagan before calling the US-Canada border “a meeting place, rather than a dividing line.” Hope it gets back to that.
