Lovely photos! I haven't been to Portland since I was a little kid on summer vacations...we often combined Portland, Old Orchard Beach and Kennebunkport. Maine looks just as pretty as I remember.

I visited Monticello as a kid and enjoyed the views. I need to go back now and look at the architecture here and especially at the U of V in more detail. Re: Films that affected your Travel destinations
This is going to seem odd, I guess...but as a kid I really enjoyed the Road to.... pictures with Bob Hope, Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour. Nothing really serious about them on the surface...but all of them play in some way with the idea of different cultures and how not understanding them can lead to strange circumstances. Of course, in the Road films, no really bad consequences ever happen, but still...they did make me curious.

I took a look and it looks like just what I need. I can even use the info to plan our route. I had my mom look at it, too, and she said it reminds her of when she was a kid and my granddad had a book called Duncan Hines that had local places all over. I wonder if that's the same Duncan Hines as the cake mix?

Great piece! The Huntington is one of my favorite places in the LA area and also pretty close to another one of my favorite spots ther , the beautiful racetrack, Santa Anita. As far as smog goes in LA , it really has gotten a lot better since I was a kid but still can be a shock to people.

Having traveled with children myself, I'm quite sympathetic to folks on the road with their tots. It's hard to do and difficult to keep them entertained and sitting still for such long periods of time. I feel sorry for parents who are trying to comfort their children -- some in obvious distress from ear pain -- without success. A lot of poorly behaved kids (eg. kicking seats) are poorly parented. I'm far more upset with the parent than with the child. the kid needs to be instructed not to do...

My indelible memory of the Brooklyn Bridge is watching Johnny Weissmuller as Tarzan, being trapped by the police, climbing up the bridge and diving head first into the river to escape. I watched Tarzan religiously as a kid. Today they would have to tell impressionable kids not to try this at home. However, it led me to got our local public pool and learn how to dive off the high diving board which I think has been removed because of insurance costs.

This will really help on time. As a kid, I took the bus from Santa Monica to Downtown LA a lot and it took forever but it was to be one of the most interesting rides anywhere. It goes through such diverse neighborhoods it almost doesn't seem real.

I can remember this story so many times from the past 50 years - here in the UK. A new air service provider comes along with hopes of knocking the stuffing out of the "Big Boys". Then, always at the last minute - the most costly time - somebody throws a spanner in the works. Hoping to break the back - or bank - of the new kid on the block.. Dirty tricks again. Did they include Photo's of the undersea Mountains ? When I was a Kid they had Slates and Chalks for recording images !! Cameras ? I don't know ! You youngsters today ! Did you know there's fossilised remains of sea creatures at the top of Mt.Everest ? That was under the Ocean once !

Thanks for your comments, Garry. The kids there were all having a lot of fun, so it would be the kind of place for families to visit for sure. They have special kid-focused exhibits and play areas, perfect for keeping their attention and letting off some steam. The Dangerous Reef exhibit is especially impressive and worth the ticket price all by itself. But there are a lot of unusual exhibits and aquatic animals. In the UK there's an outcry - when a family of Asian origin return from vacation with their 13 year old daughter married to an older man. And legally not acceptable. I remember when I was kid, hearing stories of how English fathers were keen to get their daughters married off too. Tales from around 1900 I suppose!
