Similar to the status of Champagne. I've tasted some excellent California Champagne. But to be sold here in Europe it has to be from that designated region of France. Same with Palma Ham.

In a bid to remind the world that French cuisine is (in their eyes, at least) the greatest in the world, French chefs cooked up a storm yesterday, with 1700 chefs in 150 cities preparing feasts in bars, restaurants, embassies and even a prison.

Italy has submitted papers for Neapolitan pizza to be recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage on the list of "intangible" cultural assets.
