Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, Jan. 20, 2014: The Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, California
It is a great photo of a great bridge! And likely a rare day. Most of the times I've been in SF the fog and gloom preclude a nice photo of the Golden Gate.

Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, Jan. 20, 2014: The Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, California
I would recommend renting a bicycle at Fishermans Wharf. Take your time crossing the Bridge Stop at Sausalito - Starbucks - Take in the beautiful surrounds. Watch the Fishing Boats. Take the Cycle track and head for the Ferry at Tiburon. Come back to SF on the Ferry and watch as the City rises from the fog. Great day !

Re: Where in the World is TravelGumbo? #62
No conversation? Well, it looks limited in the yacht/marina element. Low industrial buildings or shopping center across the water? No signs of big shipping, though larger ships/ferries on other side. Fog bank in the distance. And a somewhat elaborate window from the observer's viewpoint.

Re: Behind the Scenes: Academy Museum of Motion Pictures
An interesting behind the scenes look, Lester. Thanks for sharing this. Do you know if this Academy building will be open to the public, or will it just be for members of the Academies and their invitees? As I recall, the current Academy building is mostly off limits except to Academy members.

Re: The Sunshine Skyway Bridge – The Creepy and the Miraculous
I drove across the Skyway Bridge for the first time about a year ago. It was a dark and foggy night (sounds like something Snoopy would type out, doesn't it), and the bridge seemed to go on forever. But it is well constructed and on the upslope makes it seem as if you're riding to the stars. Scariest bridge I ever was on was on across the Alligator River in North Carolina. The bridge was between a half mile and mile long, very low lying (might even be a floating bridge), but the fog was so...

Re: The Sunshine Skyway Bridge – The Creepy and the Miraculous
I love it when the Skyway is enveloped by fog, it's spooky and exhilerating at the same time! I'd have to say my scariest crossing of a bridge came when I crossed the Royal Gorge Bridge in Colorado - whoa!!

Re: A Walk in Greenwich Village
As an even earlier 8th street walker (from the early 60s on) I also remember the wonderful 8th Street Bookshop, and numbers of artisan leather and jewelry shops...it was where you went for sandals...sad now, but nice to see Washington Square alive again, even if somewhat sanitized... The seemingly unstoppable expansion of NYU, like that of Columbia uptown, has changed the character of the area profoundly.
