Re: Where in the World is Gumbo? #11
The Verona suggestion could be a strong possibility given PHeymont's affinity for the city, which we are in complete agreement. Hmmm..Maybe this guess is too obvious and PHeymont is trying to deceive us through chicanery.

Re: World's scariest hiking trail?
DEFINITELY NOT the hike for me. I like hiking but I just hate standing beside a drop like this. And those boards just don't look strong enough.... But interesting to read about and see.

This is pretty tough. Looks like an old bridge with strong Chinese influence. I've never been there but would favor something in Southern China or maybe Southeast Asia. Anyone besides PortMoresby ever seen this before?

I wonder whether the wooden structure is the same age as the stone supports or a replacement.

Re: Should Wi-Fi be free in all hotels?
Maybe it's the old capitalist coming out in me, but I think "should" is a strong word. Free access to wi-fi certainly helps me determine where I'll stay, just like free breakfast is...but if a hotel has enough other amenities so that people are willing to pay for it's wi-fi then so be it...although it is easy enough to get free somewhere, I don't value it enough to pay for it.

I agree with you John, that market forces will drive this. But the demand for "free"...

Re: Where in the World is Gumbo? 21.0
So far we've only had one stab at the solution, by member Andredeya ( Florida- Miami Design Preservation League- Beach Patrol Headquarters Building). Appreciate the effort, Andredeya, but that is not the correct solution. So I'm offering up two additional clues today: This is a view of the interior of the hotel, again with strong nautical influence And this is the view south from the hotel's pool. The next piece of real estate to the south is Antarctica. So, where in the world is Gumbo?

Re: A Culinary Adventure in Portugal
Sagres and Superbock Beer are a Portuguese favourite. I always have a supply in the fridge. For drinks after dinner I prefer a Mateus Rose Wine. Strong in alcohol content - sparkling and not dry. Portugal has an all year warm climate as the prevailing winds come up from North Africa and the Sahara Desert.

Re: Marriott buys Canada's Delta hotel chain
It is actually a great move on Marriott's part, because they don't have that much of a presence in Canada. Delta runs quality hotels and are in many Canadian cities. And a benefit of the strong US $. You can buy foreign goods at a discount now, including hotels.

Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, June 18th, 2014: Bears
Hi Mr. Heymont, thanks for your story. Yes, they are strong and it is nearly impossible to stop them from getting in to something that they really want in to. They used to dump our garbage all the time and Dad tried everything but to no avail. Finally, he chained them all together, three big barrels, and that finally stopped the bears from being able to overturn them. They still dug inside and sometimes spread the garbage around a little but it did help a bit. We would also try to burn it...

Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, June 18th, 2014: Bears
The black bears in Yosemite NP are among the most aggressive and clever in the world. They've been known to pull down a locked closed car door to get at a picnic hamper or cooler in the back seat. They are amazingly strong -- imagine the power needed to peel a locked steel car door off its hinges. And they share this knowledge from generation to generation! Once a bear has eaten human feed, they are "spoiled" forever and often become more aggressive in their hunt for food and may even need...

Re: Banff National Park: Hiking to Boom Lake
Thanks, GarryRF. Bear attacks are about as common as lightening hitting folks, but it does happen. I've never encountered a bear while hiking except at a distance (could see them across a valley for instance). Here's what you do to be bear safe 1) Follow the park rules. They're very good about placing warnings (eg. trail closed, bear hovering over a carcass) 2) Hike in tight groups of four or more. Bears have never attacked a group of people this large 3) Avoid baby bears. If you see one,...

Re: Iran: Friendliness, Culture, Modernity - So Far Away From The Clichés!
Hello Dr. Fumblefinger, Thank you for your Feedback! To answer your questions: 1) The infrastructure is good to very good, and it is extremely easy to travel within Iran: there are lots of buses and excellent trains, there is a wide range of hotels, from simple guesthouses to world-class 5 stars hotels, restaurants going from street food stalls to fine dining, ... I have read that with the very fast development of tourism, the high-end category of hotels is the one that might get overbooked...

Agree with Rob, Mac! A superb set of photos of a windy day in South England. Beanie might not be a bad idea, because if that gets lifted the gusts might also just be strong enough to take you with it.

Re: Dollar Strength Making World Travel Cheaper for Americans
Of course there is a corollary to this story. While a strong dollar may be good for American travelers going abroad, it's bad for American businesses. Foreign travelers will have to pay proportionately more to travel to the USA, and will be looking to go elsewhere where their Euros and pounds and ruppees will go farther. Less visitors, less revenues, less jobs, less good for the USA economy.

Re: How do you see Airbnb? The Times keeps track.
The most negative feelings I've seen expressed online directed at Airbnb have been on forums, almost all from those not adventuresome enough to try it but who consider themselves "in the know". I think it must be terribly frustrating for those who'd like us to think they know everything, but who know nothing but hearsay about what's really become a movement. I've been verbally turned on when I've posted anything positive, accused of shilling for the site, among other imaginary sins. I always...

Re: Luggage to withstand airline handling
We bought a couple of sturdy Samsonite hard cases in 2003; one is still going strong, the other sadly passed away last year - after being bounced up several flights of stairs by a hotel porter in India. We were very disappointed with the two new Samsonite spinners we bought following this incident. Expensive, but quite flimsy. We have already had to put in warranty claims on both of them and I doubt whether they'll see much of 2018.

Isn't is aggravating to get a new piece of luggage from a reputable company and it just isn't the quality of its 'ancestor'? I'm sorry to hear this, but glad they were under warranty.

I was impressed by the name of the memorial. "Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe". Full credit and kudos to the Germans for acknowledging what happened and their role in it. I'm not sure if other countries would have used such strong language.

Yes, Rob, that bottom image is scary because you just know a strong wind will knock those homes down. Poor people using what they can find to create a shelter and home. Part of the triumph of a half century of Castro rule.
