Hi, Ted... Me and my family like to do road trips...we're planning one now from Atlanta to Denver...but we've never gone to California that way...too far. So if we wanted to fly somewhere in California and have a 10-day or so road trip with a few days stop at the end, where should we start and what should we see?

Having traveled to Denver in the past month, I'll vouch for that fact there a lot of places to charge your devices. And there are still lots of gates that completely lack chargers, so they still have a long way to go. The free wifi at Denver is quite fast and widely available. Much appreciate! I think this should be a top priority for all airlines -- places to charge that phone and iPad before you fly. It would be good if the consumer organizations provided comparative scores.

Hi GarryRF, Yes, this part of the world includes vaste stretches of wilderness. Lots and lots of unspoiled mountains, valleys, forests, rivers and lakes. It is only an hour's drive from west Calgary, so lots of those of us who live here spend our weekends in the Rockies. Much like those in Denver. I empathize with your rainy, muddy experience. That is no fun. As I recall, Kitty Hawk is also very windy, one of the reasons the Wright brothers chose it. They knew if they could fly their plane into the wind for some distance, no one could challenge the fact that they had flown a heavier than air machine. We are west of Denver in Morrison, Colorado. It is always fun to go out to Dinosaur Ridge to see the dinosaur tracks. They have a bus and some really good guides. Sometimes, we make a day of hiking at Red Rocks.

It is cost effective, but RV is not for everyone. I don't suggest you try it with 2 kids on a long trip for the first time. Rent one where you live for a weekend and see how much you like it. If you like it, rent one for the trip above. But if you end up hating it, you'll have a bad time from Denver to Cali.

Thanks for the note, TravelandNature! AeroMexico has pretty regularly scheduled flights into La Paz, though through Mexico City, so you'll have to connect. Worth checking major search engines like Expedia or Kayak, though, because it is a rather long drive, though I enjoy the desert scenery of Baja California.

That was my first thought too, but the scale seems wrong. The airport roof looks much bigger in the pictures. I suppose this could be a part not in the pictures, but what appears to be bonsai in the planters seems all wrong for Denver.

Lots of interesting comments. It does indeed remind me of the Denver Airport, and it is specifically designed to make you think of a ship. It is actually part of the roof of Canada Place in beautiful Vancouver Harbor. I'll do a full discussion on it in a post tomorrow. Jonathan L was the first to correctly recognize the structure, and PortMoresby and Still Country Photo also figured out where it was. Excellent work, team! I first visited Cannery Row in 1964, on a trip from the Bay Area in my '53 Plymouth with friends, going to the Monterey Folk Festival. We slept free on the floor of a room in the Monterey Hotel of someone we met and generally had the kind of fun kids had in the mid-'60s. Thanks for the comment, PortMoresby. I am not fond of places badly decayed, but it would be nice to have more of the original cannery scenario still in place, instead of all the tourist traps. Agree about the Monterey Bay Aquarium. It's not to be missed, but was omitted from this piece because it didn't exist in John Steinbeck's time.
