Re: January 20, 2020: Newport Beach, California

Great photos Rob. Can I use your POD page to ask a question that I've been afraid to ask ? When I visit my US Family each year from the UK I am impressed with the good standards of Restaurant Food. But when I ask why some Restaurants are rated better than others the answer surprises me. "Because Restaurant C serves huge portions" In a health concious World I wonder do folks ever question themselves ?

Always a puzzle, Garry, when looking at restaurant reviews, because not everyone values the same thing, and not everyone is health-conscious, even if they say so! And it's not just portion size, either: even in more sensible portions there can be a lot of unhealthy extra calories, food that isn't fresh, etc. And with the arrival of plant-based 'meat,' I find myself amazed at how many people who rail against processed food are pleased to eat this incredibly-processed 'food' because it is...

Also Garry, unlike countries like Japan, it's common here to get a "doggy bag" for leftover food. A lot of people take that home and reheat it for their lunch at work the next day. I found is its pretty easy finding healthy choices in restaurants in the US in bigger cities. The problem can be in rural areas where sometimes all they have is chain and fast food restaurants.

Hi GarryRF. Thanks for the feedback. The lovely afternoon I spent at Crystal Cove State Park with my family really was one of those instances where you look around, feel grateful and content for what you have and say to yourself..."What more could you ask for".

I keep a Video Log in my mind of all those "perfect moments" when you say to yourself " Hey ! Life doesn't get any better than this" I often re run those moments to myself on a winters day - usually catching 40 winks on a Sunday afternoon. Priceless !

Merry Christmas, Ottoman! Yes, a beautiful tree. Sadly, I find the the "green" disclaimer a little off-putting.

Beautiful Christmas Tree indeed. Best I've seen since the NYPD chased me with night stick raised in 2002. In Rockefeller Center when they switched on the Christmas lights. Memorable as the best ever Tree Display. "You need to disperse that way Sir" - "Sorry Officer, but you've sent my wife and kids the opposite way " - " You'll do as I told you" - "No way - Watch me......."

For some reason your Newport sign makes me think of the famous Laguna beach Greeter.Eiler Larson, who lived quite a life .Although I am too young to remember him , the stories my parents told and seeing his replacement several times bring back great memories. Reminds you what effect people have on tourism too. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eiler_Larsen

Re: Pelicans gliding by at eye-level, Crystal Cove State Park, Newport Beach, California

I didn't realise how unpleasant Pelicans were until I was Fishing off the Pier in Clearwater. He sat next to me trying to steal my bait from my bucket. After a few threatening fists he stopped, but remained at my side. Then I finally caught a fish. The Pelican opened its wings and took flight from the pier. As soon as my captive fish was above water the Pelican stole it off my line. Mugged by a bird !! Grrr....

I really like visiting here. There were probably 12 sea lions in the cave and a lot that visible from the outside observation deck. It was a steep walk down to the observation deck and back up. gorilla tag
