Thanks. this article brings back memories of my visit in 2005. The tour led by the Park Ranger was fascinating and very even handed. I had a great time.

If you are going to Gettysberg, I highly recommend also seeing the Anteitam battlefield. It is about an hour's drive away, and well worth the trip. I would probably do Anteitam first as it the battle there was about a year earlier in the war.

Thanks for the tip, Jonathan. Another interesting stop is to President Eisenhower's home, which adjoins Gettysburg. Like stepping back into the era of MadMen.

Waterloo...I can relate...my foot is starting to tremble over an imaginary clutch just thinking about it.. I agree that it looks a little haphazard to be french. I'm thinking peloponnese? Where is that type of smaller white cobblestone used ? And what is that on the facing of the archway?

Marvellous piece of history and such a great photo blog to accompany it. Your camera work certainly gives us a taste of the original battle. The end of another tyrant who wanted world domination. Worthy of an entry in any glossy magazine Mac.
