This whole no travel thing is making me insane, l We've missed two trips already, one because of sickness over Valentines Day and one one because of this irritating virus issue. We also have two more (2+ week road trip through 11 states for our anniversary, and a trip to Atlanta for a convention) before the end of June that will prob not happen. Just so frustrating. Later today, after I'd posted this photo, I was watching the local 6:00 news, Sacramento. A fire had started in Lincoln, NE of Sacramento, a yard full of trucks engulfed and spreading into grass, moving toward a subdivision. A spotter plane left the Grass Valley Base, flew over my house and I looked to see what it was. About 10 minutes later the news helicopter showed it arriving low over the fire to inspect it. I went out again to watch the next plane, a retardant tanker, possibly the one...

Currently estimated at 32,00 acres in size, the Butte Fire is now burning 1 mile from Mokelumne Hill. While I have no doubt the tiny town will be saved, your best view of it at the moment may be here , on TravelGumbo. More details on the CalFire site.

The flag looks familiar and if I'm not mistaken, that brown blob is the bear on the CA state flag. If so, I think that narrows down the search for type of tree considerably.

If you'd like to really drive yourself crazy, search "wooden piers southern california" then on the result page click on "images" at the top. Not to say definitively it's so. CA but it's as good a place as any to start.

The best burger of my life was at a food court, a very nice one to be sure, at an upscale mall in Roseville, CA, near Sacramento, possibly the last place on earth one might expect a spectacular anything, but there you have it. I wasn't even there by choice, accompanied a mall-going friend. And I almost never eat burgers, it was just my lucky day. I'd like to go again but I'm afraid to find out it may have been a once-in-a-lifetime score.

I think I like the last landscape best of all, the sense of space and the fact that it's not at all what I expect when I hear "Everglades". Gumbo's travels, ever-enlightening.

It reminds me that the thing, technology, that we think is making us great, is setting us up for extinction. That effort, compared to digital, what wimps we are. Including me, from my Rollei SLX to the camera I use for pictures here, the size of a pack of cigarettes. I'd be in much better shape if I hadn't put down the Rollei.
