By a quick count, I’ve photographed markets in nearly three dozen cities in the U.S. and Europe; they’ve often appeared here on TravelGumbo. And yet the market I visit most often, and where my wife shops almost weekly, hasn’t found...

In April, when we visited Brooklyn's Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket , the focus was split between the vestiges of winter (root vegetables, cider, meats and cheeses) and the harbingers of spring (bedding plants, flowers, and hothouse tomatoes).  ...

Grand Army Plaza is one of Brooklyn's hubs, where Prospect Park meets the Central Library, a memorial arch, the Greenmarket and much more.

It's clearly winter now at Brooklyn's Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket, with only a few days left until Christmas, and only the hardiest of crops remaining—but those include lovely piles of scallions with their roots showing, and plenty of turnips, beets and carrots. Not to mention lots of apples of many varieties (no, those aren't tomatoes in the boxes) as well as meats, baked goods and specialty foods. And, of course, it's the season for some non-edibles as well, in the form of holiday...

I love open air markets. As we get closer to Christmas and everyone we meet is on their best behaviour. Polite and full of good cheer ! With temperatures here in the UK floating between 50 and 63f we all give thanks to the jet stream. And it looks like this will be the first year I've picked Tomato's from the greenhouse on Christmas day.

Looks like an oasis of culture in a big city. I love to see markets and open spaces where people can meet and chat. Puts the heart back in the community. A real mixture of photos that took me a while to guess what country I was in. A good challenge to the WITW is Gumbo fans. Maybe a passing similarity ?..

Yes...let's see who gets this one! Like the Gumbo piece I did once on copies all over the world of the Statue of Liberty , that Roman Arch theme is everywhere!
