Christmas markets everywhere are always full of crap, mixed in with the good stuff. Most of these high altitude lakes remain frozen most of the year. While it's further north, I am very familiar with Lake Louise in the Alberta Rockies. While at only 5200 ft above sea level, it receives a heavy snow fall and the ice remains on the lake until well into June, returning in the early fall. Hiking in the area is really limited to June, July and early September (unless you hike slogging through snow and slush)

Sure PortMoresby, the two cameras I use are a Pentax K10D dSLR with a Pentax DA 55-300 mm f4-5.8 lens and the other is a Panasonic Lumix TS2. The Lumix takes macro pictures like nothing else I have used, I am learning to get better at taking macro with my K10D but am still not as good yet as I am with the Lumix. DrF, the honey bee (the one with no hair) was taken in the lovely flower gardens at Lake Louise, Alberta and the bumble bees were taken on a trip to the Bowden Corn and Sunflower...

I think Dr. Fumblefinger is on to something, as the tree in the foreground is a copper beech. We need a geologist to help us with the appearance of the rock face, but it does remind me on Mainland Greece. I am looking forward to another clue or perhaps someone else solving this.

I am really stumped this time. The style of the church is gothic, rather than Spanish and it is perhaps Episcopalian/Anglican. The palm trees indicate that it can't be too far north. So maybe it is the Old South, or possibly California. I'm now waiting to find out where it is!

Admittedly these cabins lacked the comforts of the white plantation owner's dwellings, but they are much nicer than many homes I have seen in my travels. I think here specifically of the huts made of cow dung and sticks in Tanzania as an example. I am also inclined to see the interior as a place of safety to those who lived in them, but understand your point and the metaphor.

What fun! Glad your iPhone was working (hanging on to you was the least your hubbie could do) and am actually surprised at how fast its shutter speed is. These guys are really moving and most cameras would have caught them with a blur except in the sports setting (very fast shutter speeds). I think all big events like this are best enjoyed with new friends over a glass of one's favorite beverage! Thanks for sharing this moment. I am a free speech advocate, and don't like this ruling. Free speech can be abused and, yes, there will be people who lie to hurt someone. But that won't be avoided by being 100% sure people have used a service. For example, if I want to hurt my competitor's restaurant, I'll go in, buy a drink, then go home and trash them on Tripadvisor. Similarly, guide book authors can be "bought off". Honest opinions are very important from experienced travelers and the more sources we have, the better...

The bar for new carriers is pretty high, though. They can't have full route systems, so they are forced to either try to horn in on high-volume routes, where others can easily drop prices low enough and long enough to push them out, or on low-volume connector routes where money can be made only with poverty-wage crew...which is why the majors have left those routes. We'll see, but I am skeptical.

I too am a fan of Colonial era hotels. The only ones I've ever stayed at were in Sri Lanka where, at the time, they weren't much more than a night at a Howard Johnson's. Thanks for posting this. I was not aware of the scam but am glad to know about it. I use VRBO more often than AirBnB for no other reason than I got used to it. I suppose the same kind of scam could come through most of these 3rd party vendors. Thanks for the heads us. I am probably one of the few people who does read the small print and the owner instructions when I rent a place. I treat rented apartments as if they belonged to close friends.
