Re: Kyoto Tells Tourists What Not To Do

Wow. Most of the list IS common sense. But tourists don’t always practice common sense, maybe at times myself included. Thing is, I have observed several Japanese tourists doing exactly what they advise not to do on their list during my travels to Europe. :-/ Most recently, almost felt that the rules didn’t apply to them as I was scolded for taking a picture without flash at Sacre-Coeur (didn’t see the sign). That was my mistake. However, while I was getting scolded for my offense, several...

Re: No Champs Elysees Christmas market this year

Christmas markets everywhere are always full of crap, mixed in with the good stuff. I went to Strasbourg last year, which is one of the best Christmas markets in France, and even in Strasbourg there are some stands selling crap. Then again, I always wonder what people are expecting. "The best Christmas items in the world?" And about half of the people claim that the items are too tacky and that the items on sale should be higher end. The other half find everything overpriced and would like...

Re: May 10, 2017: Frozen Lake - Clear Creek County, Colorado

DrFumblefinger ·
Most of these high altitude lakes remain frozen most of the year. While it's further north, I am very familiar with Lake Louise in the Alberta Rockies. While at only 5200 ft above sea level, it receives a heavy snow fall and the ice remains on the lake until well into June, returning in the early fall. Hiking in the area is really limited to June, July and early September (unless you hike slogging through snow and slush)

Sure PortMoresby, the two cameras I use are a Pentax K10D dSLR with a Pentax DA 55-300 mm f4-5.8 lens and the other is a Panasonic Lumix TS2. The Lumix takes macro pictures like nothing else I have used, I am learning to get better at taking macro with my K10D but am still not as good yet as I am with the Lumix. Something about the stonework makes me want to say late 19th century; if so, the gargoyle is an anachronism. The roofing looks too modern to be much older, I think...and yet, am I fooling myself?

I am really stumped this time. The style of the church is gothic, rather than Spanish and it is perhaps Episcopalian/Anglican. The palm trees indicate that it can't be too far north. So maybe it is the Old South, or possibly California. I'm now waiting to find out where it is!

Admittedly these cabins lacked the comforts of the white plantation owner's dwellings, but they are much nicer than many homes I have seen in my travels. I think here specifically of the huts made of cow dung and sticks in Tanzania as an example. I am also inclined to see the interior as a place of safety to those who lived in them, but understand your point and the metaphor.

I am a free speech advocate, and don't like this ruling. Free speech can be abused and, yes, there will be people who lie to hurt someone. But that won't be avoided by being 100% sure people have used a service. For example, if I want to hurt my competitor's restaurant, I'll go in, buy a drink, then go home and trash them on Tripadvisor. Similarly, guide book authors can be "bought off". Honest opinions are very important from experienced travelers and the more sources we have, the better...

The bar for new carriers is pretty high, though. They can't have full route systems, so they are forced to either try to horn in on high-volume routes, where others can easily drop prices low enough and long enough to push them out, or on low-volume connector routes where money can be made only with poverty-wage crew...which is why the majors have left those routes. We'll see, but I am skeptical.

When you make your way to Sri Lanka, PortMoresby, check out some that island has to offer. You might be pleasantly surprised. Sri Lankan people I interacted with actually were quite grateful overall for the contributions the British made to their island -- tea plantations, roads, railroads, and government. Those are all interesting comments, PHeymont. And I do love the attached photo! I am not a fan of graffiti, although I love great street art of the type shown in this blog. But I do recognize the importance of the former as a type of political speech. For example, in Prague the "John Lennon" wall (see photos below) was an important symbol of the resistance to Soviet Communism. After the great singer/songwriter was assassinated, graffiti sprang up on one wall in the city mentioning him and...

I've actually visited Perth, attending a medical meeting there some years back. I really enjoyed the city. Mostly modern, but with historic colonial era buildings. Very friendly people, especially considering they're all descended from convicts (a point of pride and good humor with them, I found). Perth was a good springboard for a road-trip around southwestern Australia, including a drive up to Shark's Bay, through the wildflower way (am I remember that name correctly), down to the large...

I am in no way casting aspersions on the photography but I'm just not seeing the point of the thing. All that effort and resources for piles of dirt with tits. I wonder, if they imagine crowds will flock to see it, did they do market research to establish there would be interest? And if so, what do you suppose they asked doing the survey. I'm dumbfounded.
