And rightly so too ! The smell of a fast food establishment hits you before the visuals. The litter it creates and the smell of people who insist on eating - on the hoof - as they visit palaces of art is an abomination !!
Why would anybody say that the habit was "despised"? Disdained, perhaps, but most of the French are quite frugal. If anything, they have always been embarrassed by leaving leftovers, if they had to do so. I had a great aunt in Moselle who always kept plastic bags in her purse for stowing away extra food at restaurants.

Also Garry, unlike countries like Japan, it's common here to get a "doggy bag" for leftover food. A lot of people take that home and reheat it for their lunch at work the next day. I found is its pretty easy finding healthy choices in restaurants in the US in bigger cities. The problem can be in rural areas where sometimes all they have is chain and fast food restaurants.
Mdina is one of the few places I've been that's, in my experience, unlike any other. I thought it so beautiful on my first visit that I booked a room in the closest hotel just outside this gate and spent several days exploring it and the adjacent town of Rabat. Lunch at the restaurant of, I believe, the only hotel in Mdina, the Xara Palace , was memorable, wonderful service and food and a small compensation for not staying in the 5 star hotel. In Spain they take the largest, roundest fruits. Cut off the top and scoop out the inside. Fill with Lemon flavour Ice Cream and put the top back on. Wrap in food wrap. Freeze them. Buy them in the store next to the Ice Lollies. No drip Ice Cream !!

Thanks Samantha. All great tips. Some we do now and some (public transit) we do not since we live outside Edmonton and both work in the city. A 15 minute commute would turn into over an hour on transit. We actually just redid our cable subscription, obtained a better plan and updated internet with a reduced monthly cost. With our kids now moved out we are able to save a good bit on our utilities, phone costs and especially food costs. All extra coin for the next trip.

Fresh cooked food doesn't often cause problems but you're right to be cautious, India has an impressive rage of bugs. I recall seeing 2 young neurotics scraping black specks off toast (what about the knife, the plate etc) - they'd eaten toast and Lomotil for 3 weeks (not advised). I think of travel in Thailand as "Asia Lite". In a good way. It was the first place I ventured in Asia and have continued to go back, combined with more challenging destinations. This area brings back fond memories I remember falling a lot too because I was unable to buy good boots in an era when Romania rationed just about everything. The hike from Brasov to Poiana is a nice one and there is a bus as well if you don't have a car. Besides skiing, there is also a good tourist restaurant in Poiana that serves hunters food. To say that Ireland is typically wet and cold is true of Winter. The Summers are often pleasant and warm but when you get to the West Coast then the wind blows in of a cold Atlantic Ocean. Skinflint that I am, I do not buy a lot in airports. It does seem that the offerings have improved in recent years. Where there used to be only a tiresome newsstand and a shop selling dry sandwiches, we now have thoughtfully stocked bookstores, much better food selections, and even bright hair salons. The prices are often not competitive. However, the possibilities of where to spend the money have improved.
I really enjoy Thanksgiving Day when I'm staying with my American family over there. Some of the food you have that I've never seen in England ! I'm well aware that there may be many contributing factors to the problem of poor service. But I'm not there to consider the state of the world nor am I there to balance justice among the poor. I just want a decent meal at a decent price. Just as in any job - my own included - people just want me to do my job. Do it well. No excuses. And they show there gratitude occasionally, with a tip. On my frequent visits to Philadelphia from England I always fly with US Airways. Not an exciting experience - just a reliable journey with convenient times. But my last round trip was an amazing transformation. AMERICAN AIRLINES and US Airways have merged and the staff were amazing. The plane was a new Airbus 330 both times. The legroom was more than enough. I usually purchase extra legroom and this time I'm glad I didn't. The food was good and served hot. Free cans of Cola and orange etc.
Tough call. Roquefort is my all time favorite cheese. Not sure killing wolves when in pasture land is workable. When wolves get hungry they go where the food source is located. Wouldn't they keep repopulating and returning until they're all shot? Eradicating wolves is not a good decision for ecological balance. Difficult for the government to make either side happy.
I love wolves. They are beautiful, but they are also smart and efficient predators. An easy food source like sheep is something they'll go back to again and again once tried, especially if they develop a taste for mutton. Much easier than bringing down a deer, for example, or chasing rabbits. Cattle ranchers in the north central US plains and Canada face a similar problem, where wolves can develop a taste for calves. And that is much more costly to ranchers than the loss of a sheep.

I can't disagree, especially since I'm seldom a shopper for what the best of these markets sell. But I do have one fond memory of the market on the Champs. Christmas 2012, first night of the trip, walking and tasting from food stalls (NOT the churros!). After sharing a gendarme sausage with my wife, we stopped by a cheese stall that was offering tastes. I'm glad to see more Chinese nationals traveling. But I'm a little surprised by the math of it all. 130 million people spending 130 billion dollars only works out to a thousand dollars a person. I can't imagine a vacation anywhere, with perhaps the exception of camping, that's that inexpensive -- even if you exclude airfare. Rooms, food, transportation, admission, shopping. Hi Paul. Just curious. Would an outdoor wine tasting be permissible in the US? I always find events like this to be so civilised. Folks just mixing and tasting locally produced food and wine. No one over indulging and a beautiful way to enjoy a summers day making new friends.
