A beautiful report DrF. My feeling is that the best of all views of the cathedral is down by the river, as you suggest, where the perspective changes and one feels the intent of the location of the church, to dwarf us mere humans by the power of the building and, by inference, of God, the dominance of the building over the town magnified. I visited once long ago, then more recently with my mother and now feel a return visit may be in the cards.

I'm also a long-ago visitor (1995), and your report has definitely put it in the picture for 2017. My first encounter was even earlier, in a 1960s college course, where slides of the Cathedral were the main visuals for our study of Gothic architecture. Another worthwhile stop in Chartres, near the old main post office, is this monument to Jean Moulin, a martyr for the Resistance. He was prefect of Chartres at the beginning of the war.

Another City worthy of a thousand "picture post cards". So much more rewarding than being stuck in a long line of "Move along" tourists. Take time to appreciate the thousand years of devotion by 300 generations.

Thanks for your comments, everyone. Chartres is a special place. We did it as a daytrip but I'd like to spend a few days here in the future. The cathedral is one of the most fascinating I've ever visited. And the town is charming.
