This whole no travel thing is making me insane, l We've missed two trips already, one because of sickness over Valentines Day and one one because of this irritating virus issue. We also have two more (2+ week road trip through 11 states for our anniversary, and a trip to Atlanta for a convention) before the end of June that will prob not happen. Just so frustrating. Thanks for the journey, JL. This one has been on my wish list for some time. I do intend to make it one day. Also love the Bagdad Cafe. I remember the movie, it was one of those cult classics that, like you said, went almost unnoticed. Good to know the buildings are still there.

I've only had the pleasure of a small part of the road (east of Flagstaff and yes, passing that corner in Winslow, Arizona, but Route 66 is pretty much the symbol of the feeling so many of us have, of wanting to discover a past still visible in the present, and worth holding onto. Another good book for "shunpikers" is George Cantor's "Where the Old Roads Go: Driving the First Federal Highways of the Northeast." It's an easy and rewarding read even if you're not setting out on Rte 6, Rte 20,...

I n the mid-90s the National Park Service sent a team of professionals to do a survey of surviving road and features of the entire route, Chicago to the Santa Monica Pier, with my husband as illustrator for the report. I don't know if it's generally available but it might be interesting reading for someone with more than a casual interest.

I haven't been on this one, but I have gone to a few, including Empire State and the old World Trade Center in NY. I always enjoy the view, but if there's an open observation area, I find myself with small chills and odd feelings in my legs as if I were going to fall...no matter how secure it is! So for me, it's the view plus a thrill ride!

I've been to the Hancock tower in Chicago, but not the Sears tower (I like that name better to). The views sure are spectacular. As for me, I'll admire the view without going into the skybox, thank you very much!

If you'd like to really drive yourself crazy, search "wooden piers southern california" then on the result page click on "images" at the top. Not to say definitively it's so. CA but it's as good a place as any to start.

I've only just recently relocated to the Northwest (I was hoping to be in Seattle but company changed my location), but I'm close enough to love it. One place I've been for one of the best meals ever is Ray's Boathouse. It was really great fish and right on the water at the edge of the city.

The best burger of my life was at a food court, a very nice one to be sure, at an upscale mall in Roseville, CA, near Sacramento, possibly the last place on earth one might expect a spectacular anything, but there you have it. I wasn't even there by choice, accompanied a mall-going friend. And I almost never eat burgers, it was just my lucky day. I'd like to go again but I'm afraid to find out it may have been a once-in-a-lifetime score.
