Re: Top 10 Most Beautiful Gardens In The World
I think that's one of the problems with so much travel journalism: Top-Tenism, the urge to line things up in order and crown a winner. That means, often, directing attention away from wonderful things that 'didn't make the list.' I'd much rather see lists of 'Ten wonderful gardens you might enjoy' or 'ten restaurants I've enjoyed.' As for gardens: Some are quite formal, others either informal or with the goal of showing nature rather than decor. Some are large, others small. Some are...

Re: Cape Grace Hotel, Cape Town, South Africa
It was part of a package that included safaris in Botswana and travel to Victoria Falls, so I'm not aware of the line item expense but the package was expensive. But it was a remarkable experience, Andredeya. I usually stay in "average" places but once in a while it's nice to pamper yourself. The Cape Grace will definitely pamper you More info on Cape Town HERE . A Daytrip from Cape Town HERE .

Re: Saudi Arabia now promoting tourism
That's an ENORMOUS change in policy from the Saud Kingdom. I'd heard this crown prince was a reformer. These sort of changes are to be encouraged, even though the Kingdom has a long way to go.

Re: London- multiple questions
Thank you for all of the information. I am finally ready to finalize some things since we leave at the end of this month! We have decided not to do Liverpool...seems like we should come back and do that someday. I am thinking the Megabus option may be the way to go to Salisbury and catch the shuttle to Stonehenge from there. That way we can see the cathedral while we are there. Do you know if it is a short walk to the cathedral or will we need to take a taxi from the Megabus stop? Do you...

Re: Homes of Leadville
I think for the U.S., Victoria is pretty much it. We've often shared styles, but what is referred to in England as Regency is usually called Federal here. You might make an association between your Georgian and our 'Colonial.' Certainly no post-Victorian styles here are associated with reigning monarchs. I wonder what sort of style might be associated with Edward VIII... well, maybe not!

Re: Banff National Park: Hiking in the Subalpine Splendor of Sunshine Meadows
Those photographs are wonderful, they're really giving me the itch to be there in person again. My visit to Banff and Lake Louise many years ago is one of my fondest travel memories. Imo, Lake Louise is one of the most beautiful, majestic and peaceful places to spend time. Recently, I've been considering going back, but I'm not one for cold weather. So it's gone on my list for next summer and I'm really looking forward to it. The last time I went, we drove from Seattle, and the drive through...

Re: Banff National Park: Hiking in the Subalpine Splendor of Sunshine Meadows
Thanks for the nice comment, MsNomadica, and welcome to TravelGumbo! The Canadian Rockies are a very special place and perhaps no place is this better demonstrated than in Lake Louise. If you're traveling from Seattle, a trip up through Victoria and Vancouver, up and north from Whistler towards Jasper, then down the Rockies through Lake Louise, Banff, Canmore. I'd recommend making a loop drive, down through the Crowsnest Pass, Fernie, Cranbrook, Bonners Ferry, Sandpoint, Couer d'alene and...

Re: Valletta, Why Do I Love Thee So?
The island of Malta became part of the British Empire in 1800. The French had invaded Malta 2 years previously and were unwelcome. The British removed the French and established a base there at Valletta to give them a port in the Mediterranean Sea. And it provided employment and security to the local people. In 1964 it voted for Independence. The Coat of Arms of Queen Victoria can be seen over the VICTORIA GATE photo - above. The current Queen Elizabeth ceased any connection with Malta in...

Re: All the Tea In...Charleston?
While I'm on the subject, here are the places Fodor's regards as the best 10 places in the world for afternoon tea: http://www.fodors.com/news/pho...ts-for-afternoon-tea I wonder if those who chose them have actually been in all 10? I've been in 5 of the 10, although had tea in just 3 of them (Penang, Orangery London, Victoria BC). To their list I'd add the Peninsula HKG and the Strand in Rangoon.
