Re: Montreal: Je Me Souviens

arion ·
I'll give it some thought while cruising the Hawaiian Islands later this month, if I have a minute when not learning to hula dance, eat poi and look down into volcano craters. Aloha from Montreal, in the Province of Quebec where our provincial government wants to pass a law making it illegal for Muslim women to wear the hijab, for Jewish men to wear the skull cap (forget the proper name) and for South Asian men to wear turbans, if they work in government institutions (i.e. schools,...

Re: Idaho's Craters of the Moon National Monument

DrFumblefinger ·
Thanks for reading the piece and for your comment, GarryRF! The "Yellowstone" hot spot has migrated over the past thousands of years from eastern Oregon, across southern Idaho and now sits right under Yellowstone National Park. Actually the hot spot hasn't move at all, the earth's places move away from the hot spot, but it's just another way of thinking about it. I'd be careful about being around an active volcano but don't mind hanging around places like this or much of the Hawaiian...

Re: The Beautiful Pools and Geysers of Yellowstone National Park

DrFumblefinger ·
Hi Andre, and welcome. As DrY is away on vacation, I'll try to answer your question before he gets back. Yellowstone National Park does sit on what is known as the "Yellowstone Hot Spot". You see this in its geysirs and hot water pools. This does have the potential to become a massive volcano and cause a tremendous eruption. As big as any volcano in recorded history and then some. The jet stream would carry the ash and smoke mostly east (towards the Atlantic Ocean), so those areas would be...

Re: Heads Up for Travelers: Iceland's Volcanoes May Disrupt Travel Again

Travel Rob ·
I happened to travel to Europe in 2010 fairly soon after air traffic was started back up and there were a lot of hotel bargains to be had whole summer as many people canceled in advance. Then I traveled again in May of 2011 and another volcano disrupted some traffic for a few days and similar bargains were out there.

Re: Heads Up for Travelers: Iceland's Volcanoes May Disrupt Travel Again

PortMoresby ·
There can be an up side to travel during an eruption. My plans proceeded during the 2010 eruption and the first result was a southern route to Rome and a spectacular view of the Pyrenees, flying parallel to them. I learned how big those mountains are, had had no idea. After arrival in Rome I immediately booked sleeper compartment tickets from Budapest to London (already had Rome-Budapest), to replace the flight I'd booked. As it transpired, the flight ban was over by the time I got on the...

Re: Visiting Erupting Mount Etna

rbciao ·
We were there in 2014 and it was one of the most interesting days to walk around this area. We had no idea the volcano had so many side vents. We did not purchase the guided tour on the big tire vehicle, but were very impressed, nonetheless. We stayed in Taormina for a week and took day trips to various locations in the eastern part of the island. One place we spent an afternoon was a mountain to town with my last name. It was very cool. This place does not see many travelers and everywhere...

Re: Visiting Erupting Mount Etna

George G. ·
My wife and I stayed a couple weeks at the seaside town of Naxos that was between Mount Etna and the sea. Our room faced the sea and in the middle of one night we heard some big booming noises and thinking and eruption was occurring I dashed into the hallway. Seeing flashing lights from the back side windows, I hustled to the big rear windows only to see fireworks being set off from the slopes of the volcano. Whew ! Had a great time there with a visit to Taormina and the fantastic wine and...

Re: The Big Island of Hawaii (Part 1). Volcanoes Park

DrFumblefinger ·
Thanks for the comment, PHeymont. It's a great destination partially because the tourist industry can't control it. The volcano will do what it wants and as the flow of lava over the road reminds us, we have little power to stop it.

Sicily's Mount Etna in big eruption

Paul Heymont ·
Mount Etna, one of Italy's two active volcanoes, began an eruption on the night of February 27, sending flame, smoke and lava into the air, continuing into the morning. The eruption was visible from the cities of Catania and Taormina; the volcano is Catania's next-door neighbor. While a flurry of volcanic activity in January led to some schools being briefly evacuated, scientists at Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Vulcanology say that this eruption is not a danger to people or...
