Looking at the picture, it appears to me that the business class option is a far cry from the direction upper class has been going of late, more and more comfort. Does this mean it will be more comfortable than currently is the case for economy passengers or less comfortable for business class? Maybe the arc has peaked for upper class comfort and this indicates the start of a slide down the other side.

I would presume the wider seat arrangement would more likely be "Economy Plus" rather than business class. Say two large people buying a 3 row seat and the third seat would get squeeze down by the wider adjustment of the above. International business class nowadays is almost universally lie flat bed seats. To not have these would mean a loss of this lucrative market for the airlines.

Maybe the trend will be to 3, rather than 4 classes, with econ+ going by the wayside and the flat bed option called first. Who knows. Business started out looking something like econ+ does now. Four options seems like about 1 too many to me.

Keep in mind that the picture is the patent model...tricked out with real upholstery it may look very different. Other than fitting big people better, I think this may mainly be used on smaller airliners that fly as one- or two-class, as British Air does on a lot of European flights....business class there is pretty much just empty middle. This would allow flexibility. Be my guess...

Not sure how comfortable it would be, but I'd be willing to give it a try. Might especially be good for people who usually sleep on their stomach.

I can think up a few problems but maybe the've factored for those. it looks like,instead of getting your knees hit by a reclining seat, it could be your face. And I could imagine getting all twisted up in the straps by the time I wake up.

It looks to me as if any impact by the seat in front would be on the edge of your face pillow rather than your face. And since the straps go one over each shoulder, you'd have to perform an amazing contortion to turn yourself over and twist the straps. I've got a different concern: could I really sleep facing forward and down? Where do my arms go?

I just love an air travel video that presumes passengers in economy have so much leg room. Maybe - with that much leg room - reclining the backs of our current seats wouldn't be such a disaster. Resting your head on the guy sitting behind you !

I like choice, so this is overall good news for consumers. On a somewhat unrelated topic, we've covered Canadian jet manufacturer Bombardier on our pages. It seems the company is very near agreement with Delta to sell it 125 of its new C series jets. It would be a big boost to Bombardier and might allow Delta extra basic economy seats and new routes on which to sell them. More on that story at this link .

I'm excited to fly in a C-Series and will go out of my way to buy a ticket when they start appearing! I also like the trend of one way tickets being less because that opens up lot's a route opportunities

My first flights on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner

I'd been following the development and troubled roll-out of the Boeing 787 "Dreamliner" for more than a decade, but only recently had my first chance to fly this aircraft on a trip to India. One of the appealing things about the Dreamliner is that its size and fuel efficiency open new travel routes, partially bypassing the usual "hub-and-spoke" model. I was among the first to fly the newly established Toronto to Delhi route (nonstop), a more than 14 hour journey. That's a long time to spend...

Change at the low end of American's menu of fare options isn't the only one they plan for economy flying. An upscaled version of premium economy will be rolled out, starting next year, for long-haul flights. http://www.aa.com/i18n/urls/pr...title=premiumeconomy

Great report! I really enjoyed the larger windows of the 787 on my trip, the extra carry-on space and especially the air. The air seemed moist compared to a regular flight.

My flights were mostly at night so the windows weren't that noticeable, except you could see they were large. But I definitely agree. The biggest things most people will notice when flying the Dreamliner is that they don't get so dry.

Did you get the light show of how many colours the cabin can change into ? The way it gives the impression of speed with the lights racing along the overhead storage bins ? My favourite part of a long flight is watching the colours of a sunrise above the clouds. Something that was missing on my last 787 flight because the Captain had darkened all the windows - to keep the passengers asleep.

Thanks for your comment, Garry. The flights were night flights so it was the intention to keep the cabin dark so folks could sleep. Really didn't see the great sunrise through those big windows, but that gives me hope for future flights! And no light show. Canadian captains aren't that flashy, I guess.

I just don't get this "it has to be dark or I cant sleep" "Please pull your shade down Sir. The Lady 5 rows back cant sleep" - "But it's only 3pm in the afternoon !!" I can sleep anywhere - light or dark - in a cold tent - on a hot sun lounger. I'm usually asleep before take off. Day or night. Maybe flying isn't as exciting anymore.

On my return overnight flight (Philly - UK) last week I had my headphones on. I was conducting the orchestra while "Queen" sang Barcelona. Fast asleep. There was a crash that woke me.
