Re: Dec. 23, 2016: Out of Service (Sign of the Times)
As my daughter keeps reminding me, Dr Who's Tardis is a police box, not a phone box. The real question is: What will Clark Kent do?

Re: Arriving in Venice, 1960
Almost a Big Mistake in Venice. I remember taking my daughter to Venice for her birthday then buying a $750 ring for her in one of the jewelry stores. The owner told me I could get the tax refunded from the government and he said it would be about $700. I said that is almost the entire price of the ring, then he told me the ring was $7,500 because I converted the Lira wrongly on my calculator due to many Lira zeroes with that currency. She did get a ring but not that one.

Re: London In 1927, Recreated Shot For Shot.
Thank you for that fascinating link! The similarities are as startling as the differences (including the freeing up of Marble Arch from its gates and stone guardians). I've passed it along to my daughter, whose teenage students were sure the other day that color films were only about 30 years old...

Re: Newgrange; Ireland’s ancient Passage Tomb
Walking the "Walls" that enclose the City - maybe 3 miles around - is a local ritual ! At frequent intervals there are Pubs to stop at. The idea being that you stop at each one , have a drink and proceed to the next. Its only the hardened drinkers who complete the circuit. A friend from Anna Maria Island, Florida sent his daughter to stay with us for a while. Same age as my daughter and they got along like a house on fire ! So when we arrived in Chester I told her our day was walking around...

Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, May 3, 2014: Metropole Hotel, Hanoi
My daughter was in Vietnam a year ago on her honeymoon DrF. She would visit the local Churches - as these were often pieces of exquisite architecture. On occasions outside Christian Churches she would recognise the tune of a Hymn - and while staying outside - she would sing along ! Yes - I know - a little crazy and religious too ! Communist countries don't outlaw religion, its just tolerated. The Cathedral of Notre Dame in Ho Chi Minh City. (Photo by my daughter) She has a list of good and...

Re: The Royal Palace in Phnom Penh, Cambodia
It's always good to see the art and beauty of emerging nations. Far from the images that we had in our minds if we remember recent history. My Daughter has travelled extensively in Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand and tells amazing stories of some of the local food. Which completely deters my wife from venturing into this part of the world. When we were in Bali and Singapore she survived on McDonalds ! Give me Fish Head soup and Chicken Porage any day !

Re: Feb. 4, 2016: Speke Hall, Liverpool England
The early architecture of nearby Chester predates Speke Hall by over 1.000 years. I asked a Canadian girl who was visiting my daughter if she would like to walk around the 2,000 year old wall of Chester. Built by the Romans. "We did history in school. It sucks, Cant we just drive ?" I think appreciation of the finer points of life are acquired when you turn 40.

Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, Jan. 09, 2014: Roadside produce stand, Southern Sri Lanka
The best part of any journey is tasting the just picked fresh fruit ! When my daughter was living in Greece I would go up to the flat roof. A Lemon Tree was overhanging and laden with fruit. As large as an Orange. The Lemon skin had a glorious citrus perfume to it. Just scrape your thumbnail across it. And the flavour was so sweet ! Unlike a store bought lemon that we call "winky"... hard to eat without closing one eye ! Oh yes - I love eating Lemons ! GREEK LEMONS

Re: The Intrigue of the Orient Express
A bit over a year ago, when I wrote the blog above, I mentioned the surprise picture I'd taken of my daughter, with the Orient Express sign on our train at Munich, about to leave for Vienna, by then the last stop. Imagine my surprise, and pleasure, this evening when my wife found the picture while sorting through pictures to be scanned from the trip! And here it is...

Re: Gumbo’s Pic of the Day, February 20, 2015: Postcards from Morocco - orange juice vendors
Another unusual practice that came as quite a shock. Not one that you or I will suffer I think Mac. My daughter has long natural blonde hair. And every male in the market wanted to stroke it. I told them a firm NO ... but they insisted. And the line to touch her increased. So our day in the market was cut short.

Re: NYC-The Lower East Side
Thanks for this piece, and especially the notes on the Lower 'Eat' Side. I used to live not far away from Katz and Yonah Schimmel, although in those days I couldn't afford them as often as I might have liked...but I remember enjoying the aromas even when I couldn't eat! By the way, Russ and Daughters has just opened a small sitdown cafe where their "appetizing" can be enjoyed. The Tenement Museum is a great place for families; I've taken small school groups there. Each apartment in the...

Re: High Atlas Bride Fair, Imchlil, Morocco
Excellent photos of a tradition I knew nothing about ! It's in events like weddings that we see how much our customs vary. In the UK there's an outcry - when a family of Asian origin return from vacation with their 13 year old daughter married to an older man. And legally not acceptable. I remember when I was kid, hearing stories of how English fathers were keen to get their daughters married off too. Tales from around 1900 I suppose!
