Camping on the pig farm beyond the abbey in the sixties But loved it. A fine wee nugget of a port town that never seems to lose its charm - there's no room, unlike sprawling cousins of Scarboro, Brid and Filey

Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, March 18th, 2014: Chihuahua Man of Marsaxlokk

PortMoresby ·
Island Man, just over a year ago I landed on Malta after my freighter trip from Singapore. I stayed first in Marsaxlokk for several days, at Duncan Accommodations, above the bar of the same name, which it appears Chihuahua Man is looking right at! I loved the town, especially fun on market day. Thanks for the memory.

Love the photo and the backstory, Islandman! Chihuahuas are really quite amazing animals -- extremely intelligent and very affectionate with their owners. A little small for my taste, but I can see his attraction to them.

The one I have in the photo is married (this was to avoid confusion, I was there with my boyfriend but we're not really married). The one for single was a lot simpler, just a streak on each cheek as I remember it, but I didn't get to see the one for 'looking' as no one in our group was!!

Re: September 20. 2019: Drying Fish, Beruwala, Sri Lanka

DrFumblefinger ·
The Sri Lankans sure know how to make some delicious curries from those dried fish, Professor -- thanks for showing how it's done, so simple really. It's surprising how the tradition lasts, even in days of good refrigeration. For example, in Alaska many of the dog team owners dry hundreds -- even thousands -- of salmon each year with which to feed their teams (and themselves) over the long cold winter. Spaniards remain fond of dried salted fish for their dishes, and I'm sure there are other...

Certainly is worth going to Toronto just for that experience ! Taking the kids to an exhibition of wildlife stays with them forever. They reminisce with their friends for years. Never forget it. Certainly would love to repeat the experience myself. Looks like a masterpiece of an Aquarium.

Re: Ripley's Aquarium of Canada, Toronto

DrFumblefinger ·
Thanks for your comments, Garry. The kids there were all having a lot of fun, so it would be the kind of place for families to visit for sure. They have special kid-focused exhibits and play areas, perfect for keeping their attention and letting off some steam. The Dangerous Reef exhibit is especially impressive and worth the ticket price all by itself. But there are a lot of unusual exhibits and aquatic animals. My favorite aquarium still remains the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which I hope to...
