Re: Where in the World is Gumbo? #11

Paul Heymont ·
Well, here it is Friday night, and I see everyone gathered around to see what's in the Gumbo (e)mailbag and here...because indeed, the mystery has again been solved. Gumbo was in the Roman Arena at Arles, deep in the heart of Roman France. First to point at the site (but not to actually claim it) was Port Moresby, who contributed a picture of it at 1 pm on Wednesday while others were pointing out other Roman arenas. PM was followed by TravelandNature at 11 pm that night—you'll have noted...

Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, Oct. 18, 2015: Olive Grove, Saint-Remy

GarryRF ·
I always thought picking olives would be a labour intensive task. I watched as the farmers wife placed a round blanket ( with a split in it ) on the ground under the tree. Then the tractor had a claw attachment that gripped the tree. Then it shook the tree for 10 seconds. All the olives fell on the blanket. Job done - 1 minute a tree !

PortMoresby ·
The remains of Rome are great to see, it cannot be denied, but it's those lovely little bridges that will be the target when I go to Arles. And I will, no doubt. The village within the walls reminds me of the "anfiteatro" in Lucca Italy. It was filled by houses until the 19th century when it was cleared, leaving the ring of buildings on the perimeter and creating the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro. I had the good fortune of renting a large apartment in the perimeter ring of buildings, overlooking...

Paul Heymont ·
When you get to Arles, you may want to look at another bridge, this one crossing the Rhone. The clip below is from this website , which also has several other side-by-side comparisons of his paintings and today. The bridge here is modified or replaced, but the steps and the walk along the Rhone have not. And here's another image from my visit, looking down the Canal d'Arles from near the Langlois Bridge (the official name of the "Van Gogh Bridge.")

Re: Van Gogh Museum takes a new look at Vincent

DrFumblefinger ·
The Van Gogh Museum is one of the most interesting art museums I've ever visited. Basically it's the collection of Vincent's brother, Theo, an art dealer who saw his brother's potential and who helped support him by purchasing his paintings. Around half of the art Van Gogh created is in this museum and with this fresh look, it's definitely a "Must See" for folks coming to Amsterdam.

Re: Jan. 5, 2019: Vincent's Room, Saint-Remy-de-Provence

George G. ·
Vincent Van Gogh is my all-time favorite painter. Extremely gifted people sometimes are perceived and act as being on the fringes of mental instability. I really didn't appreciate his painting until I saw the originals which just are incredible when compared to 2D images. I did trace some of his footstep in Arles (which is a fantastic place to travel) and I was extremely disappointed when our bus tour to the Netherlands skipped the Van Gogh museum because we ran behind schedule.
