DrFumblefinger ·
It's a great image, Islandman! I really enjoy photos of people going about their every day lives in different locations about the world, a reminder to me how much more alike we all are than different. This photo is made more interesting by their obviously ethnic diversity -- people who have come to Dubai for a good job and to improve their lot in life. The contrast of the old wooden taxi and modern skyscrapers in the background is great!

I've never really had Catalina on my list, but it's been in my head for nearly 60 years since the Four Preps song told me that "26 miles across the sea, Santa Catalina is waiting for me..." For any others who remember (or would like to), here's a YouTube link...

Thanks Samantha, great report! I'm from Southern California and I sure miss going to Catalina. My favorite thing has to be watching the flying fish as you take the ferry across. They used to rent motorboats to go around the island yourself, which was cool. Do they still do that?

Re: Top 7 Things to do in Avalon – Catalina Island

DrFumblefinger ·
I only visited Catalina once in the ~25 years I lived in Southern California, but I remember it being exactly as you describe it -- a quieter place that's well away from the glam, glitz and adrenaline-paced speed of the mainland. We also did an island tour and enjoyed that. Mr. Wrigley introduced a herd of bison on to the island which are still very popular.

Yes, they are all full size boats. Say an average of 4 meters (13 ft) each? Vegas is becoming a great place to see modern art.

The word "audacious" comes to mind and, I think, appropriately. I think it's always been one of Art's jobs to make the viewer's say "What the hell?", and public art of this scale especially. It makes one want to meet the person whose mind conceived it. Good work, Nancy Rubins. ("crafted" indeed, DrF.)

Hi there, Travel Luver, Thank-you for your comment. Laos is an awesome place, indeed! In the main tourist centres of Northern Laos, especially Luang Prabang, I found the tourist infra structure to be well developed. In the smaller towns, and away from the usual tourist route, there were very few hotels but Guest Houses were common. Getting around included river travel and local buses. I found river travel the most comfortable although the boats were sometimes crowded. I've seen some blogs...

Looks like an amazing place. That's the last thing I would have expected in Texas. Can someone give me the idea behind Tex-Mex ? Is it a range of cooking or just the spicy sauce. And - yes - I'm in England.

Re: The Famous River Walk in San Antonio, Texas

DrFumblefinger ·
Yes, wonderful memories indeed. I've been here a few times, although probably the last time was about 20 years ago. It's a busy place in the evenings, but gives you a nice shaded place to walk on a hot day and lots of dining options. I also remember a rather good jazz club on the river -- wonder if it's still there? I'm surprised Rita's didn't have a nice choice of hot sauces for you to add to that food -- fire it up to your tastes!

Re: The Famous River Walk in San Antonio, Texas

Justin from San Antonio ·
Garry, I'm assuming by your statement of "That's the last thing I would have expected in Texas", that you might imagine Texas like many of non-Texans do; lots of dry, dusty desert all over. In reality, Texas has a really varied landscape, that includes swampland, rolling hills, pine and oak forests, grasslands and plains, mountains, lakes, canyons, rivers, and yes, dry, dusty desert. One particular area of Texas just northwest of San Antonio that is always popular is the Texas Hill Country.

Re: The Famous River Walk in San Antonio, Texas

Paul Heymont ·
I haven't been to it for years, but one of my favorite San Antonio memories is another "not dry and dusty"—the Japanese Tea Garden in Brackenridge Park, which is not far, if I remember, from the San Antonio river. It all started from an abandoned quarry which became a beautiful garden. It's especially wonderful early in the morning. Justin, have you thought about writing some blogs on TravelGumbo? Sounds like you know a lot about your area, and it would be great to have some!
