Re: Heidelberg Castle: Where Gumbo Was (#135)

PortMoresby ·
No, in the lower left of that one, right below the individual tree on the left and below your circle. Put your finger dead center of the top photo and it's there, just above the 2 gothic windows, between the 2 halves of the castle. Looks like a modern construction and appears to be leaning left, 2 chimneys.

Re: Where in the World is TravelGumbo #297

George G. ·
Thursday's clue tells us more about our mystery location. In addition to private homes, this famous street has a few buildings used for other purposes. The church with the sharp steeple was built in the high Victorian Gothic style, while the Jewish Temple was built in the Queen Anne style with neoclassical revival details.

Friday's clues...two more days to go! Two brothers built mirror image houses side by side until one brother’s house was demolished so his other neighbor could expand their home and build a carriage house. This house has Italian and French Renaissance influences with a gothic window. The other house has a blend of Italianate and Georgian Revival which is currently a B&B.

Re: Where in the World is TravelGumbo (#76)

Roderick Simpson ·
I am really stumped this time. The style of the church is gothic, rather than Spanish and it is perhaps Episcopalian/Anglican. The palm trees indicate that it can't be too far north. So maybe it is the Old South, or possibly California. I'm now waiting to find out where it is!

Re: Where in the World is TravelGumbo (#81)

Well, to start, I count 15 medieval air conditioning units. The architecture feels like a curious cross between medieval (the tower) and gothic (large windows) so it's likely neither. Maybe a modern faux-historic hybrid?

Re: Collegiate Church of Notre Dame, Vernon: Where Gumbo Was #31

They are similar in sharing the general features of Gothic architecture...but this one, while nearly as high in the nave, is much narrower. There are quite a few famous Notre Dames, especially in France. Marseille has one high on a hill, overlooking the port.

Re: January 31, 2017: Ye Olde Chip Truck, Kenora, Ontario

GarryRF ·
It's great to see real chips and vinegar making a comeback ! I often get folks in the US teasing me over the way we used to say Ye old shop. Just to put the record straight - and I'm sorry to disappoint so many - we never did. When the Guttenberg Printing Press arrived in England from Germany in 1440 there was no Greek letter "THETA" pronounced "th", so the nearest Look-alike letter was a Gothic "Y". So that soon replaced Theta in the printed word. But always pronounced The.
