Re: Ellis Island - Island of Hope or Island of Tears?

Paul Heymont ·
As Garry points out, many people had their names altered or lost in the immigration process...and that was particularly true for people whose language was far different from that of the U.S. immigration inspectors. In those cases, the inspector wrote down what he thought he heard, or cared to, and voila! Bzorkinowitz becomes Burke. As a child, I knew families that were split: Some members used the original East European names, and heaped scorn on their cousins who used what they referred to...

It's also been a number of years since I visited Ellis Island, which we coupled with a tour of the Statue of Liberty (it's neighboring island). I also recall it being an eye-opening experience. Lots of interesting exhibits and you definitely leave with a different perspective of those immigrants than when you arrived. They were brave people, entering a strange new world that was for all purposes free of any tangible benefits except for freedom and opportunity. And opportunity comes with a...

Change at the low end of American's menu of fare options isn't the only one they plan for economy flying. An upscaled version of premium economy will be rolled out, starting next year, for long-haul flights. http://www.aa.com/i18n/urls/pr...title=premiumeconomy

They do have a great game going: Take it away from you, and then ransom it back. And there's more...in the next couple of days, Gumbo will have a news update about what may be ahead for the premium end of the plane, too!

Re: AAdvantage members, bite your nails: change is coming

PortMoresby ·
A friend who works in marketing once told me that whenever you hear words such as "in order to serve you better", you're about to lose something. This sounds like it might be one of those times. I've been very happy with my AAdvantage experience for years and, as you say, earn most of my miles with credit card use. If lower fares with adjusted mileage credit are part of their plan I wouldn't mind and, in fact, might even fly American more, resulting in more, rather than fewer, miles in the...

Re: Sun Studio, Memphis: Where Legends Were Made

DrFumblefinger ·
Thank you for bringing back terrific memories of visiting this famous studio. My wife and I first visited it in the late 1980s and enjoyed the tour, followed by lunch at the Sun Cafe. To my great delight, the cafe's Wurlitzer had an original Sun 45 by Elvis in its stack (Sun #223). I have been collecting records since I was in early teens and have a number of Sun records, including all 5 of Elvis' Sun records in both 78 rpm and 45 rpm formats. Not sure what they're worth right now, but...
