I guess I'm not surprised that high toll roads keep a lot of the locals that just managed to buy a car off the expressways. best way to keep people from using a new service is to tax it heavily. Works every time.

Its because we give Indian Students an interview before they come to the UK to attend College. They get a 2 years UK "Student Visa" visa which also allows them to work for 20 hours a week. But when they arrive in the UK thousands of "students" vanish. And they fail to show up at their pre-arranged College. In those 2 years they assume another identity. So now they get a fingerprint and iris recognition photo before leaving the Indian sub-continent.. Which is only common sense - the US do it...

Although doubtless glad of the visitors and income, the Archaeological Survey of India must be dismayed that so many tour groups barely have time to walk from the entrance to the main building. As this post shows, it really deserves much more reflective and peaceful time to absorb the scale and influence of this building or simply to watch shadows change and afternoon light suffuse the ochre structure. Bravo Doc !

Given how slow road and train travel are in India, the population is ready for a more efficient way to get around. When I visited a few months ago, I observed new airports being built at a frantic pace. I think India will hit its air travel goals.

I'm curious to know if the talented artists who painted these walls and ceilings are documented anywhere. When I see such great works such as those on the abandoned and still occupied havelis of Shekhawati as well as those captured in your interesting photos, I can't help but wonder if their names are known. We hear about the rulers and rich merchants who owned many of these great edifices, but I'm equally curious about the architects and artisans.

I could not agree more with you. The guidebooks always tell you that King XYZ built a castle/palace/temple, but, of course, THEY didn't - it was an army of workers, architects, and artisans who did. As to Orchha, I reckon that at least some of the names are known, but I'm afraid I don't have the information.
