Re: London In 1927, Recreated Shot For Shot.

Paul Heymont ·
Thank you for that fascinating link! The similarities are as startling as the differences (including the freeing up of Marble Arch from its gates and stone guardians). I've passed it along to my daughter, whose teenage students were sure the other day that color films were only about 30 years old...

It's possible that the images are hand colored, an art with which I have some experience although still photos only. One would have to dig deeper to find out the timing of the use of color stock. I suspect there were a number of phases so it would depend on one's definition. Read here while I go watch a movie: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C...ng_and_hand_coloring

Re: London In 1927, Recreated Shot For Shot.

Paul Heymont ·
Back to research, and found that between 1903 and 35 there were quite a few colored films, colored in the sense of dye being added (usually by mechanical, not hand, process). 1935's Technicolor Process 4 was the first true color film, made with 4 negatives (CMYK). Claude Friese-Greene, responsible for the London film, used a process (started by his father) that used multiple copies of black and white negatives, rephotographing them through different color filters.

You might guess from my picture here that I'm proud of Scots ancestry...and the three times I visited there, I always found some cloth item for my friends...nothing big, but with the tartan. I'll bet there are small clothes and the like with typical color or print from almost anywhere...and it squishes small!

Re: Traveling in the USA in the 1930s and 1940s

Paul Heymont ·
Wow! I missed this the first time around...and while the scenics are great, it is the touching close-ups and groups of "ordinary" people that are truly outstanding; they remind me of the work of Louis Hine and Beatrice Abbott...but in color. Speaking of color...I'm also reminded of how much better early Kodachrome was at reds than at blues and greens...

Re: Lost a US Passport Overseas? What I learned this trip.

Paul Heymont ·
I like HistoryDigger's idea of carrying extra passport-sized photos...even if you don't lose your passport, you may find them useful if you need them for a transit pass (as in Paris, for the Navigo). We also carry color copies of the ID page of our passports; in case of loss or theft it may help identify you at the consulate.

The best clothes for travelling

angel ·
If you plan to be wearing the same three shirts in all your vacation photos, you want them to be nice shirts. Enter: the eternal quest for the best travel clothes. Rule number 1 is to stay within your personal style range. If your travel outfits don’t feel as good as the clothes you wear at home, you aren’t going to wear them. You want to feel like yourself on the road. If you weren’t already into the geometric prints that seem to reappear in travel clothing regardless of season, you’re not...

A Comparison between a Softside and Hardside Designer Luggage Set

Kaitlyn Angles ·
The truth is that the debate between a softside versus a hardside luggage continues to rage on, and it all depends on various factors. When you visit a luggage store, the very first question you will probably ask the shopkeeper is whether they have soft or hard luggage. Most people prefer one luggage to the other and generally, they choose it based on their prior travel experience. It is true that in the last 2-3 years, there’s been a major shift to the hardside designer luggage set, with...

Not-so-famous museums with great exhibits

Paul Heymont ·
Since we're off from school for spring break, we've had time to catch up on a few exhibits at local museums...but not the big and famous, such as the Met or MoMA. Here are a few of interest, and one we haven't been to yet, but will! Neue Galerie has an exhibit with a dual purpose: reproducing the infamous Nazi exhibit "Degenerate Art" of 1937, and commenting on its effects, both then and now. Also at the Galerie, which focuses on German and Austrian art of the last century, is an exhibition...

Why is Recycling Important? How Will it Benefit the Environment?

Image by Pexels You may have heard the term recycling. It is a process that makes a product reusable and reduces waste. Most importantly, recycling seems a better option to tackle single-use plastic items. This way, you can reproduce something useful. Take note that the items we no longer use or discard such as glass containers or plastic utensils and bag go to landfills. This place is designated to store trash. Although it seems wise to keep the trash in one place, it contributes to damage...
