Great report, Jonathan! I guess I live a sheltered life in the west, because I'd never even heard of this train route before. It intrigues me. Something to include on a snowbird journey to Florida someday.

What an interesting place. Looking at the city on Google maps it certainly has that institutional utility look of a government facility. If not knowing it was the Mendocino State Hospital I would have thought it was an old military base. Thanks for sharing.

I've been there in the past...it's great, but large-gauge models have never been my thing. But now that I know the display is built from garden scrap, I may have to take another look!

Love small railroad layouts. My dad and all the relatives in Pittsburgh use to put up a train platform under their Christmas trees every year with miniature houses, people and vehicles. Seems no one does that tradition anymore.

Re: Indian Railways - The Pride of India
I have been on the Shatabdi Express and in Executive Class it is certainly a very comfortable ride - better than most European trains. I also enjoyed the food (which was included in the ticket price). But, as you say, there are many other services which are pretty poor. There are lots wild horses in Patagonia. These particular equines weren't fenced in and probably were wild, but I'm not completely sure about that. By the way, good work at solving this puzzle, George!s You nailed it down to the name of the train stop where the photo was taken.

New Trains for Egypt
Egypt’s train services are about to receive a major boost with two new initiatives in progress. New trains built by a Russian-Hungarian consortium are joining the existing network and a brand new high-speed train line will be built, all adding up to a vastly improved experience for tourists who like to travel by train. Egypt was the site of Africa’s first railway in 1854 and although there have obviously been numerous upgrades since then, the network is starting to show its age. Accidents...

Re: New Trains for Egypt
For many travellers, Egypt has been for years a one-trick pony; up and down the Nile by one means or another covered 99% of tourism until the Red Sea and Sinai started to develop resorts. This will undoubtedly expand work opportunities in the major industrial centres for the burgeoning young population.

Varkala Vibes
At the southernmost tip of Kerala in India lies a tiny hamlet that’s a little paradise in itself. One can take a train or bus or flight to the capital city of Trivandrum and from there take another train or taxi to reach Varkala. When taking the train one needs to disembark at Sivagiri, the closest station. By road one can drive up all the way to the cliff side, where there’s a huge helipad also overlooking the waters, and used occasionally for special purposes. For both tourists and locals...

Envious. European trains ran at 200kph (120mph) when I was there and it was totally smooth gliding. They run at nearly 300kph now and you feel no vibrations while AMTRAK non-ACELA trains run at a bumpy, rocking ride in the USA at a paltry 70mph.
