Hi, I agree entirely, this monastery is very well worth visiting. I don't think you mentioned the cross inside with exquisitely carved very tiny figures all over it. I heard much of it was carved with a needle and Rila went blind while doing it. Whether I was told the truth or not, it is an amazing example of dedication, patience and devotion to your task ).

The striped pattern an archways remind me of what you see in the Mezquita in Cordoba, Spain. In Cordoba, the earlier portions get their color from different colors of stone, and the later ones were painted. Which way is it at Rila? Thanks for the view!

I was surprised to find the teachings of Buddha in my hotel bedroom bedside draw.. During a tropical rainstorm I was stuck in my room for a few hours. What a fascinating read it was ! Never had time to finish it. Had to buy a copy when I got home. My favourite quote was: "Man who commits adultery likes licking jam off a sharp knife"

Great photos, MAD! And a nice story. The Himalayas are a challenge to navigate, but as you say, it is so very worth the effort.

Prince Henry certainly knew how to overnight sailors in style. I have visited this museum and found it just terrific. It is worthwhile for seaman and landlubber alike. The original church on the site was built about 1450 by Prince Henry the Navigator, and became the place where sailors spent the night before leaving on the expeditions that built Portugal’s colonial empire.

The dodo bird is sitting in a glass jar in the hallway outside this great library. It's a long hallway, but it's there. I'm thinking with a little recombinant DNA technology, we should be able to pull some cells from that dodo bird and bring it back to life? (Would work if it's in formalin, but not if its in alcohol). But maybe it's best to leave well enough alone.

Re: Kykkos Monastery, Cyprus

TravelingCanuck ·
Ian, once again you bring back some great memories for me. The Kykkos monastery is an interesting site to visit. Cyprus was the only place I have been where I was able to ski in January up at Troodos one weekend and scuba dive the next weekend in Limassol. Another site worth the visit to is the ruins of the Bellapais Abbey, on the Turkish northern part of the island. It is south of Kyrenia and has amazing views of the northern coastal plains of Cyprus. Thanks for the amazing blog.
