I usually keep my eyes up, but do glance down from time to time. These are on the sidewalk in the town of Banff. Probably not functional manhole covers, but "art under the feet".

Those are not just beautiful, but functional in another way...if not as utility covers, then as guides for pedestrians. Do all the streets have them?

The streets crossing the main street in Banff (Banff Ave) have them, although I don't believe all the streets in town have them. I expect they're just up on the main pedestrian areas of town. But I agree, they are nicely done.

Re: Gallery: Signs of Prague

Paul Heymont ·
Here's another odd Prague sign (although it may be gone by now, and the merchandise sold). We saw it on a large and perhaps-not-lovely street sculpture that was seeking a new home in 2003. It was also seen in a Gumbo blog a while ago...

I always find that to see something of the history of a city you have to look UP ! The façade of latter day stores only reaches up one or two floors. But look above and you'll Gargoyles, Coats of Arms, Eagles and Shields and a thousand other pieces that tell a tale of a bygone time.

It's clear European buskers like making bubbles. But this guy is a piker compared to the POD I featured from Luxembourg way back when TravelGumbo was just an infant in 2013. Here's the link to that, and the photo so that we can compare which fish is bigger!

Re: Prague's Jerusalem Synagogue: Where Gumbo Was (#129)

Paul Heymont ·
My apologies to the three Guessers who correctly identified Where Gumbo Was...when I wrote the blog, the guesses were not in yet. When I updated it with the congratulatory paragraph, I apparently failed to save it, and the older version went "live" this morning. Again, my apologies to Jonathan L, TravelingCanuck and PortMoresby, all regular (and often successful) participants. .....PHeymont

How did I miss the pickled dodo bird when I went in 2012? One of the most beautiful libraries in the world. Great photos. Thanks for posting.

The dodo bird is sitting in a glass jar in the hallway outside this great library. It's a long hallway, but it's there. I'm thinking with a little recombinant DNA technology, we should be able to pull some cells from that dodo bird and bring it back to life? (Would work if it's in formalin, but not if its in alcohol). But maybe it's best to leave well enough alone.

Lovely pictures. I appreciate knowing the details too. My family and I spent a week in Prague and and enjoyed every slow day. We rented an Old Town apartment through VRBO and were happy with the quiet, rooftop location three minutes to the square but quieted enough not to feel pressed by tourists. Lobokicz Palace museum was a highlight for us all. http://www.lobkowicz.cz/en/

I've been in Prague a few times, and taken a lot of pictures, but I'm blown away by the new scenes and new eye on familiar ones. Really great pictures. As for the Charles Bridge...my best pictures of it are from the river. Once you get on the bridge...well, you can't really see it for the fascinating people scenes!

A great piece! Prague is one of my favorite cities in Europe and your post helped me remember exactly why I love visiting it. You've a great eye and the ability to see photographic opportunities -- your images are excellent! Regarding the Charles Bridge, I think the best images of the bridge itself are taken at a distance. But images from the top showing people, the row of saints and vendors are also fun and memorable.

This was my second time in Prague, the first was in summer and I can tell you the city changes completely. In winter it gets more mysterious and fascinating and you can take awesome pictures from the bridge but the best moment is at the sunrise or it will be packed with people. Thanks a lot for your nice words, they're really appreciated!

Thank you very much! I'm still learning though. I have an architectural and geometrical view of the world since this is my educational background but sometimes I get frustrated when I picture the final image in my mind but the lack of technique makes the shot different from what I wanted. But I'm working on it That bridge is stunning from every point of view, to me is more a matter of time, sunrise is the best moment to shoot it.
