Thanks for the comment, Garry, and a good question. The waterfall is almost a sea level and only a few kilometers from the ocean. So it is very moderated by the Gulf stream. So far as I could tell, the cliff and ground around it are caked in ice in January and February and hard to navigate. Flow is down, but the water continues flowing even in the coldest months. This photo was taken mid-September. It was a cold and windy day, but most days in Iceland are.

Thank goodness for the Gulf Stream. Keeps me warm in the winter at 52' north. Unlike Calgary - also 52' north - who get quite a chill. Less than a thousand miles to Iceland and I still haven't been !

Thanks you for your comments Garry and DrY. Garry, Iceland is worth a visit. It seems a raw land newly poured from the mold. Fascinating landscapes.

Nature has so many works of art that sometimes you need to stop and breath. Like so many photographers of nature - you need a keen eye to capture that precious moment. I once found that perfect scene and took a photo of each member of the family standing in for a "Portrait Picture" Until I was asked by a group of maybe 20 people to move along ! I'd started a Kodak Moment where there was just a passing glance 20 minutes ago !

Many Victorian buildings that survived the 1906 earthquake were destroyed in the fires that followed. Those, like these, that escaped both were largely located west of Van Ness Ave, the line at which fire fighters dynamited buildings, creating a fire line to save at least part of the city. I'm glad these were saved, PHeymont, or the City would be a very different place, wouldn't it. Thanks.

Seville oranges remind me more of lemons than usual oranges in that they attack your taste buds. You'd have thought the folks would have learned to plant mandarin or naval or valencia oranges!?

Very nice. My only time visiting Berlin was for the Christmas Markets and I was too focused on mulled wine! I need to go back during the year and actually explore these monuments.

I like a lot of these photos but have got two favorites: - The old snake charmer. Love the glasses, his posture, and of course the snake - For natural beauty (and the beautiful bridge), one of my favorite cities, San Francisco

This is the Sea-Based X-Band Radar dome, there was a big to do when it was moved. I can't tell where the pic was taken though. The dome was in Seattle for a spell but then relocated.

Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, July 30, 2015: Spirit Island
I know what you mean. Maligne Lake is a beautiful area to see and the tour out to Spirit Island is certainly worth it. One of the most notable things about the lake is the colour of the water itself that is due to being glacier fed. Up there this past June and was treated to a young moose feeding along the water near the boat launch and then two young black bears dining along the cutline just off the main road. Chatted with a family from Washington DC and a young German couple. They were...

My apologies to the three Guessers who correctly identified Where Gumbo Was...when I wrote the blog, the guesses were not in yet. When I updated it with the congratulatory paragraph, I apparently failed to save it, and the older version went "live" this morning. Again, my apologies to Jonathan L, TravelingCanuck and PortMoresby, all regular (and often successful) participants. .....PHeymont

Do they still have horse and carriage rides there? The horses wore beautiful displays and looked really elegant in their finery. Is that where I saw the oldest wooden school in America ?

That's a good point, GarryRF! People who live in places with cold climates do adapt and most involve their kids in out door activities -- winter or summer. For example, downhill skiing is very popular. But that walk with the penguins intrigues me. I've never heard of this except, of course, in Antarctica. Need to go by and check it out sometime.
