Re: Notes and Noticings from the road

Paul Heymont ·
Actually, I think the banks have a fairly minimal (as small as I can make it) impact on my currency transactions, in part because I never deal with exchanges; I use bank ATMs. That way, the exchange takes place not on my account, but as an interbank transaction at the base rate banks use with each other. I used to use my ATM card from Citibank, but eventually they began charging a 3% foreign exchange fee even on withdrawals. At that point, I opened an account with Charles Schwab, a brokerage...

These small views, with their varied backgrounds and very personal bikes, give me a sense of knowing Lucca, even though I haven't been there yet. It seems a quieter energy than what comes from bicycles in huge masses...consider this shot from Copenhagen's Osterport rail station:

I hadn't thought about that but, you're right, even as narrow a view as the width of a bicycle conveys a good sense of place. And my preference for towns and villages, rather than cities. I have picture of a ferry bicycle parking lot on Lantau Island, Hong Kong and, even though it's a rural place, it appears that every person on the island must be represented by a bike in the lot, there are so many. But, though crowded, I remember it as park-like compared to yours above and still gives an...

Re: A Bicycle Rickshaw Ride in Old Delhi

Few things in life are as comprehensively stimulating as old Delhi. The relative leisure of a cycle rickshaw allows you to take in so much more as on foot you would be constantly on guard against breaking your neck stepping into a manhole or a ripe pile of garbage. Believe me, in India, if it is in the garbage it is of no conceivable use.

Me too DrFumblefinger ! The Oxen pulling ploughs I've seen in Lancaster PA. but if you need a vase for Flowers (Birthdays) you get the bottom half of a 2 litre plastic Coke Bottle with wrapping paper around it. Looks quite good really ! But the bit that hurts is seeing folks suffer from curable things - like thyroid problems - that we take for granted now as being treatable. Homeopathy and Voodoo prevail... really !

Thanks for the link T&N. Bill Gates funds the School of Tropical Medicine here in Liverpool in its search for better treatment and a cure for Malaria. But tales of Save the Planet are all Hogwash. People who live in cool climates - like me - cant wait for the climate to warm up. When the Vikings discovered Greenland a thousand years ago they described it as a "Green and pleasant land with pastures and animals" - and now its just a frozen waste again ! Turn up the CO2 !

While this might be fun to pull on a flat prairie, it would be impossible in the mountains. Towing a 45 kg load up a steep hill would kill most cyclists. Sounds like something invented by someone who doesn't get on the road too much.

A lot great things about this RV I like. It small enough to get in off road spots a regular RV could never get. And the price seems a lot more reasonable than the Tiny Homes I've seen. I'm like DrFumblefinger though, I think the idea of a long bike trip on this would be hard. It didn't even look like an easy ride in the video. Maybe combined with an electric bike?

The Bicycle hasn't caught on in the US like here in Europe and the UK. Europe is covered in bicycle tracks. Mostly disused railway routes that have stayed traffic free. Just joggers and bicycles. Like trains avoid hills - so do these tracks. Perfect for cycling.
