Travel Luver: thanks! Your profile says Portugal is an upcoming trip for you.. are you going soon? Jonathan: Doesn't it suck when weather gets in the way of you fully enjoying a destination you've been looking forward to? We got lucky in Sintra, but it rained for 2 days straight in Porto when we were there.

Re: August 9, 2018: Palácio de Estói, Portugal
As I said, the guest rooms are not actually in the old palace itself, but in a modern block next to it. However, they were well-appointed and quite comfortable. We had a pleasant balcony - ideal for an hour's relaxation after a long sight-seeing day.

Re: Step Back in Time: Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado
I remember reading with fascination about this in a couple of articles by Barry Lopez. It was saddening to hear of the wanton damage done on the past, but equally gladdening (?) to learn that intact granaries and other structures are still in existence but very closely guarded. Such archaeological evidence is a delight and tells us a lot about these early inhabitants ❤️

Did you know the top drawer of Castro's desk contains every cheque paid to Cuba, by the US, for the rental of Guantanamo Bay. All uncashed.

Re: Museum of the Revolution, Havana (Where Gumbo Was #152)
I forget about that! The government refuses to cash the checks, stating that the U.S. lease on Guantanamo is illegal. And, one of the people we chatted with also suggested that Castro might not be so sure the check wouldn't bounce...

Re: Central India, Pt.2: Orchha
I'm curious to know if the talented artists who painted these walls and ceilings are documented anywhere. When I see such great works such as those on the abandoned and still occupied havelis of Shekhawati as well as those captured in your interesting photos, I can't help but wonder if their names are known. We hear about the rulers and rich merchants who owned many of these great edifices, but I'm equally curious about the architects and artisans.

Re: Central India, Pt.2: Orchha
I could not agree more with you. The guidebooks always tell you that King XYZ built a castle/palace/temple, but, of course, THEY didn't - it was an army of workers, architects, and artisans who did. As to Orchha, I reckon that at least some of the names are known, but I'm afraid I don't have the information. If you liked my photos of the inside of the Laxmi Temple in particular, here is a link to further ones: https://orchaa.wordpress.com/2...as-of-art-in-orchha/

Re: St. James Park, London
Thank you for the interesting article on St. James's Park, London. I agree that it can be crowded at times, although these days it is a pleasure to see plenty of people together without masks. I attach a picture of spring flowers and the lake. Until recently, the Royal College of Pathologists' office building was overlooking the Mall (it has since moved), and in 2011 Fellows were able to watch the Royal Wedding procession from the balcony. Just nearby is an unusual memorial to Giro (A...
