Everyone's been very helpful! I can't tell you what a great welcoming and helpful group of people you are. My uncle is an employee of Delta, so he has some kind of free ticket that requires me to fly on Delta only (no partners). I will have him check into the dates. I like the idea of flying up to Manchester, slowly working my way to London then returning from Paris. I think going to Amsterdam is more than I can bite off now, plus I want to spend the time seeing stuff, not traveling all the...

Re: Up, Up and Away: Airline miles cards with big bonuses

rbciao ·
I have a Delta American Express Platinum card that has served us well. The fee is higher than the gold card, but we can check two bags free, priority boarding, and a free companion pass yearly. We fly two or three times a year and the value of the waived baggage fee and the companion pass far exceed the $150 annual fee. The card also accrues one mile for each dollar spent and lately has offered cash back incentives. For example: spend $15 at Panera's using the card and receive $5 credit on...

Re: Why tickets stay high while fuel prices drop

PHeymont ·
Overall, for U.S. airlines, the trend is up; last month all the majors went along with a $2 average increase on almost all fares. Those fares, of course, are subject to competitive discounting on specific flights or routes; Alaska and Delta have been battling over the Seattle market all year, for example, affecting prices on those routes.

Re: Marriott buys Canada's Delta hotel chain

DrFumblefinger ·
It is actually a great move on Marriott's part, because they don't have that much of a presence in Canada. Delta runs quality hotels and are in many Canadian cities. And a benefit of the strong US $. You can buy foreign goods at a discount now, including hotels.

Re: What to expect from Air Travel in 2015

Travel Rob ·
Domestic flights have been much higher in 2014 in general and the Conde Nast link states United, Delta, American, and Southwest make up more than 80 percent of domestic airline traffic. which doesn't bode too well for lower fares or less fees in the US i think international flights will be much cheaper in 2014 as airlines like Norwegian, and others expand.

Re: SkyMall's Business Dwindles With Increased Internet Usage In-Flight

PHeymont ·
Sorry, DrF, but they ARE gone. The name and remaining assets will be auctioned, and there's a fair chance a website under that name will survive, but the paper version in the seatback is doomed. Here's why. First, from the airline point of view, the small fees received from SkyMall no longer match the cost of having cabin and ground crew maintain the placement. That's why Delta stopped placing it a few months ago, and others seemed poised to follow. Second, SkyMall only looks like a catalog.

Yes, the transfer seems to have gone very smoothly...too bad, in a way; I was hoping for an accidental bonus as I once got from Delta (which added an extra zero, back in 1999).

Re: A Price War over Trans-Atlantic? TravelGumbo interviews Norwegian Air

Travel Rob ·
I recently saw a cheap fare from Norwegian posted on The Flight Deal website. What struck me is what they said in the post (below) and how it really demonstrates the same Skytrain price matching problem . I do think consumers have to think that if they choose the legacy carriers price match ,instead of Norwegians, there might not be these lower fares in the future that Delta or United will match. " Norwegian is a low cost carrier so they will charge you for everything – advanced seat...

Re: Delta likes its 'basic economy,' will expand it

DrFumblefinger ·
I like choice, so this is overall good news for consumers. On a somewhat unrelated topic, we've covered Canadian jet manufacturer Bombardier on our pages. It seems the company is very near agreement with Delta to sell it 125 of its new C series jets. It would be a big boost to Bombardier and might allow Delta extra basic economy seats and new routes on which to sell them. More on that story at this link .

Re: A shout-out for Ryanair...no kidding!

Ireland's Ryanair has overtaken Lufthansa as Europe's biggest airline by passenger numbers. Lufthansa's 109.7 million passengers last year fell short of the 117 million passengers reported by low-cost carrier Ryanair last week, a 15% increase on the previous year, as Ryanair pulled in passengers with low prices. Any airline that gets me across Europe for $15 US (one way) can be as rude as they like. But Ryanair have always been a courteous and professional company to deal with. Delta and...

This case seems very peculiar to me. I have never understood why what is acceptable for some large airlines - Delta and United - is considered unfair competition for others. The airlines have been growing and merging since the Pan Am Clipper days. Why is this transaction any different ?

Re: Paris Authentic

This was really a neat travel experience made neater with the old car. We did like Paris and enjoyed our time there. Our 2014 Italian pilgrimage will have us returning through Detroit, which has a nice airport with comfortable amenities. We used Delta skymiles to pay for a portion of the tickets and the returning Paris option was not available. Anything is better than JFK Terminal 2.
Reply

Re: Paris Authentic

PHeymont ·
I'll see your Terminal 2 and trump it with a Heathrow T3 to T5 transfer! Actually, the good news about Delta at JFK is that Terminal 2 as you knew it is gone. Most of Delta is now in newly-expanded T4, T3 has been physically dismantled, and T2 reconfigured for Delta Connection and some domestic flights...much different.

Re: Leaning Towers: It's Not Just About Pisa!

Pisa: Last summer we flew into Pisa on Delta and spent three nights at the Hotel Bologna, which was a great property. Aside from the Leaning Tower, Pisa is a quiet destination perfect for kicking back and doing nothing. We wondered the university section and mingled with the locals and found a great gelatoria, which we frequented more than once. The area around the tower was crammed, but otherwise, the town was very peaceful.
