The Isle of Ulva, a small island off the Isle of Mull in Scotland’s Inner Hebrides, is closing its doors, or shores, to visitors on Sundays for a while after a surge in visitors following a BBC interior design program.
The island, which has 16 permanent residents and no paved roads, is also home to Ulva House, a dilapidated stately home that a local couple who are interior designers are restoring. Their project was featured on BBC Scotland, touching off the rush to the foot ferry that connects the island to the Isle of Mull. The ferry will now not run on Sundays through the summer.
The island is owned as a community trust by its residents after a 2018 buyout. Aside from the developing Ulva House there are other small hostels that are open to visitors. The ferry company has promised to assist people who have already booked accommodations on the island if they need to travel on Sundays.
