Starting this August, restaurants in EU countries won’t be offering those little plastic packets of ketchup, mayo, mustard and more at the table—they’re banned as part of Europe’s war against single-use plastics.
The rule is part of a package of regulations included in a regulation passed last year. Instead of individual packets, restaurants will be expected to use reusable dispensers or shared containers
Specifically, it’s aimed at “single-use plastic packaging for condiments, preserves, sauces, coffee creamer, sugar, and seasoning in HORECA [HOtels, REstaurants, and CAfés] sector.” The rules carve out exceptions for take-out and delivery, and for where it’s required for medical reasons, such as in hospitals.
