Santa, take a break!

You may think that Santa and his elves are hard at work at the North Pole, but the mayor of a village in the French Alps believes he’s actually in France and subject to French labor laws.

Mayor Philippe Rollet  of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne told French news outlet 20 minutes that he has published a decree reminding Father Christmas that he has the right to take breaks, even on Christmas Eve. Rollet says he took this step to “preserve Santa Claus’ psychological and physical health”, adding that “the French Labour Code states that well-being in the workplace is not an optional measure but a legal obligation.”

The town has also invited Santa and his elves to take a break in Saint-Jean-de-Marienne during their rounds on Christmas Eve, and sample the local wines, Beaufort cheese and Modane bread.
