Historic neon signs are returning to the ‘Mother Road’—Route 66—in Missouri’s Ozarks region with the opening next month of the Route 66 Neon Park in Saint Robert.
The restored signs, installed at George M. Reed Roadside Park, originally stood at various points along the Missouri portion of the historic highway.
Saint Robert Mayor James Breckinridge told press that “This park not only preserves the iconic glow of America’s Mother Road, but it also celebrates the rich history and culture Route 66 brought to our region and Missouri as a whole. It’s a tribute to the spirit of exploration and connection that defined a generation. Now, it inspires a new one.”
In fact, there seems to be no end to the road’s power to inspire nostalgia and commemoration—there are also Route 66 neon parks in Tulsa and in Granite City, Illinois as well as less-lit displays in dozens of towns and cities.
